Gfx card for 1080p HD displays

    Guys

one of my friends needs a Gfx card to play games on his 42" LCD 1080p HD TV. What's the cheapest card he should be looking at?

    Thanks.

at that resolution what will the difference be say between an ATI X1950XT and a 8800GTS?

    His budget is between £150-£280.

    Thanks

Running on a 1080P display, buying anything less then an 8800 (and I would also suggest pushing to the GTX), would probably end in disappointment.

I run 1080p with my x1950xtx fine in most games although some need the resolution dropping to run with full details on, but I agree, If he can afford that display he should get a GTX, you'll notice a fairly large difference and be much more future proofed.

Go a have a read on AVForums. There must be at least a thousand posts covering just that question - across a whole range of LCD HD TVs. The problem is all the TVs handle their inputs in different ways, their 1-to-1 pixel mapping, their image processing, etc., etc. It's a mistake to think generically.

So, find out the make and model of TV and hit AVForums.

Still the 8800 series is the best bet. Its future proof.

In nearly 30 years of messing around with computers, the one thing I've learnt is nothing is future proof!

Hint: Nvidia's next round of graphics cards is due in the next two months. So are ATI's.

To connect these GFX cards to a HD tv do you use the HDMI connector?

It seems rather small. would you have to get a larger cable and is a DVI - HD better for quality?

    Thanks

Normally, yes. You'd use a DVI->HDMI cable. Some of the newer graphics cards actually have an HDMI connector on them, but that isn't really important (although HDCP copy protection some time in the future may force you to go this route eventually - but don't sweat that now.) You may also use the VGA socket on the set - if it has one - as that's what it's designed for (PC connectivity.) Without knowing which TV set we are dealing with, it's hard to be specific...

And an update on my earlier reply about new cards: Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB is out next Monday. Around £160 + VAT. Lots of bang for your buck there. Would be a real nice card for driving an HDTV display. Make sure you check out the reviews that are sure to come out next week.
