Anyone who has one of these please give me some good reasons why I should face an almost certain beating from my wife for spending £465 on a Dell 2407 instead of the much more reasonable £280 on the 2007.

With an 8800 - yes.
every time you load a game in 1920x1200 you will thank yourself :D
as for the wife, buy her a gift and explain it was on offer and you saved x amount and brought her a prezzy with the change ;)

Plus, if you wish, you can turn them into portrait mode, which makes working in Word and t'internet browsing and such a real pleasure. Ish. I love mine so much I tried to buy a 2nd out of my own money to use at work - only the bank refused to allow me to send the money as I'd recently had a lot of fraud on my account. :(
Best purchase in all my computing years - no doubt about it.
I'm happy with my 4:3 20.1" dell - it does 1600x1200 which is enough for me. Just remember (as someone pointed out) that more pixels means more graphics power is required...
I decided those extra inches came at a disproportionate cost. I really like my 2007FP, and if I feel the need for more pixels I'll buy another one to put beside it. The two together will give much better value for money than a single 2407, and you get the bonus of a spare monitor if anything goes wrong on one of them.
Ok, you can't use that extra screen for (many) games, and I'm sure widescreen has its advanatages, but it's not a clear cut decision by any means... as your question implies. :-)
Of course two monitors are harder to explain to an SO, so if that's a factor than widescreen may be the best way of sneaking in extra pixels.

i think before you leap look at some of the GTS reviews to see how well the card would cope with todays games. If you feel it is adequate then go for the 24 inch. I ran both the 20 inch and now the 24 inch and never regretted it once. The visuals are stunning on 1920 x 1200 the wider screen gives a greater absorbtion in games and if your into FPS watch your scores go up.

I also agree that it is the SINGLE BEST pc purchase I have ever made. Totally changes the way you look at your PC and game.
World of Warcraft looks so cool at 1920 x 1200 - as does Oblivion (all i've really played alot)
Admittedley you do need a Powerful GPU ( I would buy a 8800GTX - or at least wait till they come down, a GTS won't really cut it) From experience my 1800XT256 is OK but I do get some slowdown in WoW at native res and some aa/af.
However I still stand by it as the best move I made, it is like when you first started watching films in W/S, never wanna go back to 4:3, your eyes naturally take in a wide view rather than a square one (well mine do anyways)
