I am looking a buying a 965p motherboard but they only have 1 IDE port. Am I able to run a dvd drive and hard disk off one cable? e.g. hdd on master, dvd on slave

Yes, but it will run slower as a result. You will still be able to access it as normal, however :)

I am only looking to stick an old 40 gig drive on it because i have a couple SATA. Although i do have 2 dvd drives so i am gonna have to loose one.
I'm trying to pick out good bored for core duo overclocking but all the 965p have one IDE.
looked at new nforce 650i but don't think they are as good for clocking. Looking for a review of the abit 650i board but no joy.
Go for the 965p and add in a PCI ATA133 adapter if you need to :)
sounds like a good option, can you recommend any? Either that or i use my 40gig maxtor as a paper weight!!
trying to pick out a 965p is tricky. ive actually got a gigabyte GA 965P-DS3 on order. but ive got that money spending itch and time to change my mind!
Just be aware that the onboard IDE on just about all 965 mobos is controlled by a JMicron controller and is not native. There are a large number of issues with this such as very poor PATA performance in certain setups. I would stick to SATA HD, and if u have a spare £20 then order a SATA optical drive as well and turn the jmicron controller off. Avoid the Abit AB9 Pro as it still has issues. The AB9 Quad is pretty good although I have heard very good things about the Asus and Gigabyte 965 mobos
