    Wireless WEP problem

I've just installed a new wireless card on my laptop, I can connect to my unsecured wireless network fine.
Problem occurs when I try to connect to my second wireless network that's using WEP encryption.

I bring up the network, click to connect and get prompted to enter my WEP key, which I do and when I click ok I get the following..
The network password needs to be 40bits or 10bits depending on your network coniguration.
This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.

My previous card never had this problem connecting to this network, I just entered the WEP key and it connected.
My new card is a Proxim Orinoco Gold running under Windows XP with SP2.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

The passcode you entered on to the router/AP etc.. for WEP is turned into a 26 length key on 128bit... it wants that, there may be 4 of these showing, it doesnt matter just use the first one

I didn't enter a password for the router, it's one of those Sky Boradband ones.
Came with a card that has a printed SSID, netkwork key and channel on it.

Change the Authentication to open and hope for the best

Otherwise its a case of ringing Sky or maybe there is a web interface to check the key?

I can't log onto the router, it's just connected straight to the wall, not to a system.

With my last card when it was connected to it there was no web cp either.

The sky router is setup to use WPA out of the box, not WEP, try reseting the sky router by using the reset button on the rear, hold it in for several seconds. Alternatively can you not connect to the router via ethernet and connect to http://192.168.0.1 u/p admin/sky unless u have changed them, u can change the SSID, channel and WPA password. I had a problem where so many people had the sky router that there appeared to be channel saturation and had to change the channel to something less obvious, I also changed my ID and password for obvious reasons.

Also some cards require a driver update to handle WPA, my old MSI wireless card did

Its not actually that easy - you can crack they key in 10 minutes , but you need to sniff a lot of packets ( over 1,000,000 for a 128 bit key )

there are techniques of using packet injection to try stimulate extra packets , but it not as straightforward as you'd think.

Thanks d3fiant, I'm into the user cp for the router now, any ideas on what I need to change?
Could I just take encryption off and use access control?

Have you tried it without the dashes?

There's no dashes in the code, it's like this NGHJKPR. It worked with my previous card.

Another note. if I just use mac address filtering, someone would be able to gain access by spoofing their mac address to match mine right?
