got a dell xps gen 2 (gig of ram 2 gig pentium m, go 6800 ultra) i get on the counter strike stress test around 140, but after a few hours of play this then drops considerably..
now i would say that this machine is capable of running css easily, but im wondering if its heat throttling..
that does sound like heat throttling, what kind of room conditions is the compuiter in? have you checked inside the case to see if there is any build up of dust on the heatsinks? made sure all the fans are still spinning?
yeh all is working ok, but its not right that it dips to around 50 fps, which for me is unplayable.
i have come from a system that sat at 150. But the spec of this laptop isnt bad at all, and i have read that the go ultra runs about the same as a 6800 gt desktop card, which is fine for hl2. any other ideas? the cpu slow?
your right it should'nt be dipping that low at all. I would say drivers or some kind of software update but you say its fine for the first few hours? get speed fan or avalanche something like that to check out your various temps
If it works fine initially then consistently drops in performance it's almost certainly throttling due to too much heat.
well to be fair its never given me the fps i expected, i dont know what to expect from it, but considering when hl2 was released the best card out was probably the desktop 6800 ultra i was expecting around 100 fps.
Now the native res of the laptop is stupid like 1900 1200, im running it at 1284 800 (widescreen) so nowhere near the top res, and still getting dire fps.
also nvidia havnt done an updated driver for it i dont think, as it wont let me download the latest one..
but then in reviews i have read non have mentioned overheating, and why should it? thats the way its meant to be played (quote nvidia) and they have desinged it to play games whilst sitting on a desk..
im going to reinstall windows now, i just dont know whether to se the dell disk i have here, or use a proper xp home disk and do it from scratch?
id be tempted to get in touch with dell before making any moves like that, you dont want to invalidate any warranty
warranty is out, i have reinstalled it now, but need drivers and what not, as im at work at the mo, but if its still the same i shall be anoyed at having to use an fps config on such a system.

well if the warranty has run out maybe try taking it apart and clearing any dust from inside it etc.
If possible try replacing the fans as they tend to get a build up of dust which mixes with the lubricant causing them to slow considerably
ok, well il let you know how it goes when i get home, not amazingly keen on taking apart a laptop i bought yesterday but i will if needs be.
and metier if i kicked it id proibably break my foot on this thing
Did you get it from ebay or something? maybe worth getting in touch with whoever you got it from + if it was ebay i would be tempted to report it because something like that has to be stated in the description
yeh i did but this guy was the epitomy of good seller, and i think when i get back i will find its ok, but i know the guy hasnt shafted me, as i went to his house to get it, and he had the new xps and what not so he wasnt lying..
right i have now tried it on a fesh install, what happens is its perfectly smooth, but every five seconds the fps drops for a nano second and then goes back up thus causing a lagg, and its constantly doing this no matter what settings i have, the fps goes up but its constantly dipping and dropping back down making it lagg all the time..
any ideas?
one of the fans are having hiccups ?
Is that online and offline or only online?
