well if you have had it plugged in the way i said it should work fine.

It should be the same for all the usb connection things

Is there any molex plugs (like you plug in dvd drives or ide hard drives) coming from the case?

really makes no difference, they can go on any of the usb connectors and it would be the same pin out for all of them.

Have you made sure all of the front panel features are enabled in bios?

hello im in need of abit of help with this newly built system. well i thought id try and install the usb drivers on the motherboard manufactor website so went to the eb site downloaded them installed them and it asked to reboot so i rebooted then it crashed on the welcome screen, i tried to 3 times and it still crashed on the welcome screen so then i thought id see what the cpu temp is and it was aroud 50 degrees. i dont no if thats hot or not for a pentium 4. any way i turned it off for about 10 mins let it cool down then tried to boot up again and it still crashed at the welcome screen. not noing what to do i tried reinstalling xp but it crashed on the installing devices so i thought id have a look at the cpu so i took the motherboard out and took off the fan and looked to see if there was enough grease but it looked like there was to much so i wiped the grease on the cpu but left it on the fan. i put it all back together then booted up and it automatically come on to installing windows again. and what do you no it crashed on exactly the same bit (installing devices) i retried 3 times and it done the same. ive even tried leaving the case open and pointing a fan directly inside to try and cool it down but this still didnt work. i really dont no what to do any one have any suggestions? sorry about the grammer i aint very good at english.

although that is hot for a CPU to be running at it might not be the issue. Try downloading the manufacturers Hard-drive utility from thier website and check to make sure the hard drive isnt bugg*red. You should be able to boot up with this software so the fact windows hasnt installed on it isnt importaint

ive tried the diagnostic tools on the maxtor website but it kept crashing on the detecting drives so i took the hard drive out and put it in my main pc to try it. when booting it kept coming up a blue screen but kept restarting before i could tell what it said. so i run the diagnostic tools and it passed the quick test so i reformated the hard drive and started from stratch. i then installed windows successfully and every thing seemed to run fine so i put it back into the newly built system and it booted up fine and every thing seemed to be working. but im still concerned about the cpu temp its reaching temps of 55 degrees.

ok so as far as you know the hard drive is fine?

That sounds like the CPU cooler isnt seated correctly. Which cooler have you got installed?

(EDIT) which heatpaste, and how much have you used? too much or too little and it doesnt work effectively.

(EDIT2) how are you checking the CPU temps?

na if it was already on the fan it should be fine. If you do replace it only usng about a pea sized amount and spread it evenly. I think it may be worth trying to replace the paste seeing as you are not happy with the temps.

I know that the p4s get really hot and as long as it doesnt fly to far over 60c under load it should be fine.
You could try fitting some extra fans in the case to create a little bit of airflow. Makes more difference than u think it would

    good stuff!

Sorry im stumped on the usb thing. May have something to do with the pin 10 - 'overcurrent signal' or whatever it was called. I doubt it though.

Try putting one usb connector in usb4 and one is usb3 instead of all the cables in one
