Blue Screens of Death
I have another thread about my CPU fan not starting.
I know starting new threads is usually frowned upon but I think it deserves a new thread :)
Specs:
MB: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
RAM: 2GB OCZ PC2-6400 Platinum
CPU: Core2Duo E6400
Graphics Card: Winfast 8800GTS 640MB
CPU Fan: Thermaltake Big Typhoon (Original)
Power Supply: Antec NeoHE 500W
Operating System: Windows XP (SP1)
I rescently completely re-hauled my computer and replaced my MB, RAM, GFX Card and CPU.
Every so often I get Blue Screens of Death, this may happen under stress or just random low stress usage.
I can't see what it says on the BSOD due to the PC restarting an instant after.
I'm using WindowsXP (SP1) and using the 97.92 drivers for my 8800GTS.
I had to modify my 97.92 drivers as I couldn't use the nVidia control panel (No options visible).
I did this by replacing: 'modes.txt' and 'nv4_disp.inf'.
Without replacing these files I have no way of editing or viewing my settings.
My CPU voltage doesn't drop below like 0.01V of what it should be (1.340V) even under significant strain.
And finally I have not overclocked anything and have the latest BIOS update for my motherboard.
Does anyone have an idea?

Check the EventViewer (Start / Run / eventvwr) and look through the error messages corresponding with the timing of the BSOD. This should give you an indication of whatever is causing the problem and typing the actual error code into Google may give you the solution.
-
Which should I be looking through?
Application
Security
System
Netlimiter <-- I'm guessing not that one :)
*edit* (eventvwr results)
Well under system, it doesn't seem to register anything.
I just had one like 10 minutes ago, and all the errors I see happen every boot.
They are mainly things about device errors and things.
When it Blue Screen of Deathed like 10 minutes ago, I was just surfing the net and I didn't see any voltage drops on my CPU
I'll have to see for my GFX Card as it may well be that, due to it being so power hungry.
My PSU is right at the bottom end for it, *sigh* it best not be the PSU.
I don't have enough money to get another ¬_¬'

Open run and type:
eventvwr
hit return and browse about, what you want is in the system on the right panel i guess
also i would run memtest overnight :)
-
I've already had a look at eventvwr
I will have to try and use that memtest
Is the site: http://www.memtest.org/ ?

Did you do a fresh install of Windows?
-
updating to Windows XP SP2 would be a start
anyway download this http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtoo...nstallx86.mspx it is called windows debugger
after you have installed it open her up and go File > Symbol File Path
Enter:
SRV*C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows\Symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
Now go File > open crash dump, go to your windows directory and then minidump folder and select any of the files inside (these are your BSODs basically)
Now wait it may take a while because if you have done it correctly the program will be downloading the required symbols it needs to read the minidump.
After it has finished type !analyze -v in the box you can write into at the bottom
It should now do some more work on screen...
Now what I want to know is what it says next to these:
SYMBOL_NAME:
MODULE_NAME:
IMAGE_NAME:
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID:
BUCKET_ID:
You should be noticing a trend between them all :p

That response was sooo technical and just came out of no where lol...
May i ask what you work as?
-
all I can say is...
I don't work and never have lol!
It is amazing some of the things you learn when your PC is a pain in the ass and doesn't work properly :p
Although I did do a 2 year college course so I know my way around Excel and a bit about Visual Basic etc :D

If someone finds me a way of installing service pack 2 without all the annoying security messages and promts you get, and the firewall etc. I would install straight away.
I heard of something called SP2 Lite, but I can't find it.
Last time I installed SP2 (Was pretty soon after it came out) I spent about twice as long doing things just because of all the security messages and similair prompts.
I'll get to the debugging software in a while, for some reason my internet has been slow ever since we supposedly are getting upgraded to 8Mb Broadband (From 2Mb).
*edit*
Wouldn't it be a lot easier if the BSODs were just stored as plain text documents or something ¬_¬'
Always wondered where they were stored, I knew it wrote something to 'windows\minidump' but I could never read it
*edit*
Well it seems to all be stemming from the process OneTouch.exe
This is the process used for my external USB hard drive (Maxtor OneTouch USB Hard-Drive)
I guess I will have to uninstall and re-install the driver/software etc.
I wonder how on earth it can be causing BSODs, the wonders of computers!
Never the obvious thing then aye?

The firewall is easy to get rid of you just turn it off.
control panel > security center > scroll down click on "windows firewall" > select off, click ok and your done
Also as for the other pop-ups do you mean the ones about your anti-virus and firewall software? You can get rid of them too, just go to the security center place and select reccomendations... and check box about monitoring it yourself

Right, I may attempt to install SP2 then sometime soon.
Probably not tonight, will probably spend all night trying to fix it after it breaks (Things like that always do for me ¬_¬').
I just un-installed the software and driver for the Maxtor drive and then installed it again, hopefully I won't be getting anymore BSODs :)
Thanks for your help, especially grayg1.
That BSOD reading tool thing will be very helpful, do you know of a guide I can point people to online?
Like on the Microsoft website or something :)

Guide: http://www.networkworld.com/news/200...ows-crash.html
As a side note your problem might only be fixed with SP2 with the drive being USB and a quick check for Maxtor onetouch reveals USB2.0 spec. I think SP2 added USB2.0 don't quote me on it.
Either way if you still get the BSODs before you get SP2 I wouldn't get too disapointed, if it keeps doing it after SP2 then you can kick and scream! :p
