New ARCTIC Cooler not working right

    Hi all,
I have just fitted a new Arctic Copper Silent (Socket A) to my ACER T120.

    The initial readings were:
    MB: 28 (82)
    HDD: 25 (77)
    CPU: 48 (118)

    FAN:
    Case: 3444
    CPU: 1548.
First idea is Fan too slow (should be 2200rpm), causing overheating.

That computer now closed its-self down, I assume cos of overheating.

    Any ideas please ?

    thanks for reading

go into bios and check the various settings for the fan there, make sure there is no control over the fans being done by the motherboard.

Those temperatures wouldnt cause the computer to shut down. What exactly happened when it switched off. if it came on for a while and then died and is doing the same thing over and over but for a shorter time each go, i reckon the cooler isnt seated right and you have fried the chip. This was very common with the old socket A chips, they had a tendancy to fry within a matter of seconds if the CPU cooler wasnt seated correctly (i know this from experience)

    Edit: did you use heatpaste?

    Hi Biscuit,
1/ I've never tampered with bios before - but i'll have to look into it.
2/ I thought it might be the temerature as it's higher now than it was with my old cooler (when it was running) but I now see that 48 is't that geat (& I did hear that AMD reckon their cpu's can handle 95c)
3/ It ran for about 3/4 minutes, then just shut down. I left it for an hour or so whilst I booted up this old machine to look for help.
I started it up about 15mins ago, & it ran for 10/12 mins. I thought it was fine,,, then it went off again.
4/ Yep, there was a new tube with the product. I didn't want to drown it with this tho' cos the sparse instructions said not top get it anywhere 'cept on the DIE (!)
As far as I can ascertain, it is seated properly (?!) I tried to wipe the DIE clear of previous heat-paste, but most of it came off with the old unit.
What do I look for in the bios ? Speed ? It says 2200 on the box.
I'll take it out & put more paste on & double check seating etc.
    thanks again

    LISTY:
    thanks.
yep, i removed the tape & wiped the copper base.
The unit came with paste & I applied it sparingly (!?)
Since my initial post, it seems that the actual temperature isn't a problem.
I could live with the fan speed as well,,, as long as the machine keeps going !
BISCUIT: I've taken it out & cleaned the paste off both cooler & cpu. CPU looks fine (I'v only ever seen 1 fried item,,,, this look pristine in comparison !)
I put a bit more paste on & re-fitted it. It seems to be seated o.k.
I turned it on at 13.40 & it's still running at 14.25. After warming up, temp is pretty static at 48c.
I just need to know why it turns its-self off now,,,, if it 'should' run at 48 degs,, then speeding up the fan won't make a lot of difference,,, or will it ?
    thanks again

an extra 1000rpm would make a difference to the temperatures definately. Try and see if you can get a 3pin to molex adaptor so that it runs straight fromt the psu. If you do do this you have to make sure you disable the fan check in the bios.

48c is ok but that rises to much it when under load, it could be the end. If it continues to cut out on you then i would start scraping the pennies together because the proccessor is probably dead & its time to upgrade.
Dont trust the way it looks, I have an old xp3200+ sat at home that looks pristine but is actually fubard

Socket A Heatsinks had that old fave problem of not seating properly due to the lip on the side of the socket, have you checked that it is seated correctly? As it may not be making proper contact with the die of the processor.

    BISCUIT:
It actually ran all afternoon yesterday. Mainly at 48c & 1555rpm.
I've been in touch with the supplier, who is trying to get updated bios from ACER.
I'm now not 100% certain that the item fault free.
    JAMIN:
As far as I can - yes. I re did it all (see above) with a bit less trepidation !
    -------
I'm trying to find the speed of my old unit:

    FOXCONN ZP DC Brushless Fan
    Model: PV763DJ4
    DC12v 0.6A CS Bearing
    DK6341

but can't find an actual Foxconn site.
If that also ran that slow, then it adds info to the problem.
I didn't check the speed before removing,,, as it was playing up. The temp was around 35c even whilst playing up !
Whatever speed it was,,,, the machine never cut out on me !

    thanks both
