    Processor advice

Im torn between a couple of processer choices, wondered if any of you guys would be able to give me any advice.

Ive been an AMD man, since I defected in my P3 days lol. Got an AMD Athlon XP2600 at the moment, but I just want to give my system a bit of a kick. TBH i was just about to click on the buy button for a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, when I just had a quick look on Aria and saw an Intel Pentium 4 820 Dual Core for next to no money. As I have to buy a new mobo and memory etc anyway (well dont have to buy new memory, but want to), what would you guys say? The Intel chip is only £57 all in, seems like a billy bargain to me.

No Sensei, i'm not kicking the mats to waste time, they have parted and I don't want to injure myself!

it all depends on what you use the computer or if you want to use it day to day useage like web/email that the intel d820 would be fine but if you were looking to games i would more recommend a core 2 duo

The dual-core P4s are not a great design but for office work, web surfing etc they are fine.

But then, so is your Athlon XP I expect

Ah but dual core makes the computer a lot more responsive under multiple office tasks. I'd go with the 820 - it's not a bad chip, just X2/core2duo is better for FP and gaming.

The P4 820 is fine, but runs a bit hot and consumes quite a bit of power.
The X2 3800 is cooler and a bit better.

But with the right motherboard for the 820 you should be able to plonk a core2 in in the future when they drop in price even more.

might even be worth waiting a month or so as some of the C2D chips are to drop in price by 40%. Meaning you could get a C2D chip for only a little bit more cash

That was my train of thought tbh

I bought the 915D from Ebuyer in the end, cheap as chips!

I needed to give the machine a little kick tbh and it keeps playing up...doesn't boot first time always, locks up and restarts itself...so it's time for an inexpensive refresh me thinks!

Spent £180 in all for the 915D 2.80Ghz chip, new mobo, gig of DDR2 and a 250gb WD SATA drive. Did'nt think that was too bad.

No Sensei, i'm not kicking the mats to waste time, they have parted and I don't want to injure myself!
