4 pin ATX12v or 8 pin EPS +12v

Hi, I'm just completing my first build and have come across a problem. I have an Asus P5N32-E SLI ATX Motherboard, it appears to have the option of 4 pin ATX12v or 8 pin EPS +12v.

I also have the Enermax Galaxy EGA1000EWL which appears to have optional plugs of either 8P CPU+12v, or 4+4P CPU +12v Combined Mode or 4+4P CPU +12V in Split Mode. Could anyone assist in which I should use for the Asus Motherboard?

The Enermax manual talks about itself as "The power supply follows mainly EPS12v Pwer Supply Design Guide". But this still does not help me decipher whether to use the 8 pin or 4+4 pin as the manual also reads that the 4+4 pin Combined is for Quad CPU systems (I am using a QX6700).

Lastly, would there be adverse effects from Using the EPS on the ATX or vice versa? I have to be honest, I don't understand the difference at all.

Sounds like 8 pin to 8 pin to me... Though tbh it really shouldn't matter as anything that aint sposed to work shouldn't fit!!!

Thanks Ulti. Though, the motherboard accepts 4pin or 8pin (a dust cap being the only obsticle) and the PSU offers three options.

I read at 'www overclockers com au/article.php?id=519919&P=2' that the QX6700 requires 8pin EPS to function. If anyone else could confirm that, I would really appreciate it.

So that narrows down two of my options. Trial and error I guess :)

looking at the manual on enermaxs website it doesn't even look like there's any difference in the way they work tbh

if you look at the little diagrams for each 12v1 and 12v2 on both diagrams are in exact same place on both

the whole point of an eps12v psu is that it has two 12v rails going to 4 pins each on the 8-pin EPS connector, and it can therefore drive dual cpus (two chips, not dual core)

last time i checked which would have been about 6-9 months ago, enermax were calling their gear "eps-compatible" which basically meant they'd put an 8-pin connector on a single 12v rail

so it shouldnt matter at all unless youve got something new and different

Thanks all. I am now using the 8 pin connector with the quad core QX6700 with no problems.

I see what you mean about them being the same pin formation according to the manual. It just seems funny that they provide two ways to use an 8 pin configuration (8 pin and 4+4 pin).
