    Calibrating my LCD (LG 204WT)

    Hi All,

I have just bought the LG204WT 20" monitor, but find that DVD, Xvid and DivX appear really dark. I have tried different contrast/brightness but can't seem to get the right balance. Does anyone have this monitor and has managed to get an optimal balance or has some tips for getting better picture quality?

Please post if you can help. Thanks

Maybe not a hard ware issue. Try changing the options in the software or using different codecs for the div x & x vid. I had that problem before and it didnt resolve till i did a rebuild

At the moment I am using Koepi's Xvid codec for xvid movies and PowerDVD for my DVD movies. The xvid codec I can probably change but have to stick with my DVD software. Was looking at some of the hardware calibration products such as ColorVision Spyder 2 - but not to sure if paying £60 to calibrate my LCD and getting any sort of increase in picture quality is worth paying that?

no definately not! sorry like i said when i had the same problem i rebuilt my computer to fix it. Have you got any other computer you can test it on. At least then you will know if its the monitor or computer causing the problem.

To be honest, I don't think it is the monitor. The problem is is that I have 3 sets of video controls to sort out for movies: ATI CCC, Monitor and PowerDVD or codec.

Granted, it may not be a hardware issue, but if you still feel like calibrating your monitor, you can try doing it via (free) software instead of shelling out for the Pantone Huey (or similar) - take a look at http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html

Obviously, the calibration won't be as accurate as using a dedicated hardware device, but I take it that you were not primarily using your PC for production image work.
I see, said the blind man to his deaf wife as he stuck his wooden leg out of the door to feel if it was raining.

No, my PC is used mainly for games and movies. I have switched my movie software to Nero Showtime 3, which seems much better than PowerDVD 7 in terms of colour production.
