Trying to get the best out of my 8800GTX but my cpu is bottlenecking badly. I have almost zero experience with overlocking wondering if anyone could guide me through it.
(ive been advised to overclock my cpu by 400mhz to see any performance boost)

At 2.4GHz it's unlikely your 4600+ is hindering the GTX... the 1GB of RAM you have is more likely the culprit.
i have used 1 gig ram in my machine for a while and it didnt hold back my 7900 gtx...
css doesnt use much ram..
I don't think he'll be using an 8800GTX to just play CSS.

Bottom line get more ram, or better still save for a C2D system.

I am saving for a C2D system get one by summer, new ddr2ram and mobo ect,
However if i get a gig of ram (pc3200 same as existing) now to improve performance, will it be noticable?, Im hoping to get a 30fps jump at LEAST, Also i have notcied stuttering in games now with the 8800gtx which did not happen with my old card (ie games running at 120 fps but is jittery) which can only mean i need more Ram. I think.
Nope. A game will use the same amount of RAM regardless of what graphics card you have installed. Going from 1gb to 2gb will not increase FPS either - it will reduce any paging to virtual memory which can result in stuttering, but most usually results in longer load times. Note that very few games need or make use of more than 1gb - I can only think of BF2, Gothic 3 and Supreme Commander.
Stuttering on a game that was smooth before is more likely to be a result of drivers - either just your graphics card drivers (try cleaning them out and installing newest ones) or motherboard drivers.
Remember his OS/backgound apps probably leave 1500-1600 mem free on startup, there are plenty of games will will reduce free memory to 600-700meg and a fair few that'll dip it as low as 200-300meg.
I haven't seen a game for a long while that leaves me with over 1024mb free whilst running. I originally upgraded to 2 gig for HL2 and it made a world of difference.
Does sound like drivers in this case tho - my cpu is about equivilent and my graphics card is slower too..

CustomPC ran a feature on O/Cing an X2 a while back, you need to register on their website to view it IIRC though - I got the magazine.
To be honest, you're very unlikely to see any real world performance increase with an overclock. I run everything at stock now (4400+ and 8800GTX) and I can run everything I've tried at 1920x1200 with full AA/AF.
You have got both PSU inputs wired on your graphics card right?
It would also sound to be an IRQ conflict to me (maybe try removing your X-Fi and running with onboard sound if you're still getting stuttering - to test), although an extra gig of ram won't hurt.
Stuttering was due to my overclock bumped it up to 2.6 ghz with no real performance increase, changed it back to stock and the stuttering stopped. Still though im getting fps as low as 40 in 10 man css games in 1280x1024 high textures mid/high msaa aa ect.
Ive used 3 sets of drivers. the ones that came with my BFG cd, the 97.92, and currently the 101.02 drivers, all pretty much the same in performance.

Aha, you didn't mention online - what's your Internet connection like?
Sorry i meant with CPU bots, when against players thers a 10/15 fps increase more or less due to the CPU not having to waste power on AI. Still my old x1600xt runs faster than this crap.
Also internet connection isnt an issue, and im getting the same crappy performance in HL2 single player.
Uninstall and reinstall your drivers. An 8800gtx should wipe the floor with any current ATi card.
Done all that mate, even made a fresh install of windows to make sure there were no driver conflicts. Still horrid performance.
Did you try pulling your X-Fi card? I didn't have any problems with mine, but I heard lots of people with them.
If you're planning on adding a gig of ram, I'd sell the 2*512 and get a matched pair of 1GBs.
I've had problems with all 4 slots being populated on some (DFI) boards.
