Setting up a Lan for a few days

    Hi there,

Need to set up a Lan at my mates house this weekend and I have no idea how to do it really (I'm crap at networking )

Would I just need a router, 2 NICs and some RJ45 Ethernet cable ?

My mate has this Router I think.
    Main - Intel Core i5 2300 @ 3.5GHz, 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM, Asus P8P67 Pro, Coolermaster iGreen 600w, GTX 480, Antec One Case

Hardware wise that should be fine. Most motherboards have built in NICs, so you probably won't need any more. The network patch cables needs to be wired straight (the more common type), unless the NIC are auto sensing or gigabit ones.

The other thing you will need is to setup IP addresses & routing. That router has built in DHCP, so the simplest will be to turn it on, and then configure the PCs to acquire IP addresses automatically.

Finally, if you want to share files or printers via windows filesharing, you will need to configure some guest shares on each PC, and make sure everyone knows the usernames & passwords. This is not necessary if you just want to play games.

Alright cheers, and yeah I'll be using the onboard NIC on an Asus M2N-E motherboard and one on a Foxconn 6100M2MA motherboard.
