Installing E6600 cpu

Hi,

I'm just trying to build my first pc and have pulled back the socket lever, lifted the load plate, removed the protective "socket cap" and placed the cpu in the socket. The trouble is now when i try and put the load plate back down, it won't go fully down because of the cpu being in the way. What are you supposed to do because i don't want to crush the cpu or the pins by forcing the load plate back down. The mobo is an ASUS P5B.

if you're talking about the plastic one then remove it as its not supposed to be there when the cpu is installed

I've removed the plastic thing off the load plate AND off the cpu. So the bottom of the cpu (with the gold circles right?) is touching the pins on the socket. But then that metal load plate won't go back down as far as it did without the cpu in, so that lever thing wont go back down (unless i force it but it feels too much force and i dont want to break it)

there are teeth on the CPU to make sure you can only fit it one way.

As long as the notches in the side of the CPU are in the socket correctly you should find the notches filled with the plastic of the motherboard socket.

If thats right then you will need to use force to close it - this is normal and I can tell you will work fine - just make sure the notches on the CPU line up!

Did that thanks matt, it worked (well it didnt break anything as far as i know, we shall see when i turn it on)

Yeah, should be ok - the first CPU Insertion/HSF putting-on is always a bit nerve wracking!

I dislike both AMD and Intel stock HSF's, moreseo Intel though - they're horrible to put on IMO!

had this same problem, searched the net for an hour trying to find out if i should be applying any force and everywhere people are saying it should close easily with no force, zero insertion force and all that rubbish. the paper installation guide provided with the e6600 wasn't helpful on this either. ffs i almost had a heart attack when i forced down the lever!! i'm still worried i might have bent some pins somewhere with the force i had to use to get the lever closed.

plus i dropped the cpu when i had to pry open the stupid intel plastic casing! dropped the cpu right on the floor i did! **** maybe it's damaged..

that doesnt sound too good...

aslong as you didnt break a pin it should be ok? as i dont see that there should be enough force to break anything on the inside at all, correct me if im wrong though
