"USB Input (decoding only)" What does this mean?

    Hi everyone.
I'm looking for a cd player for my car, and need it to have an aux input or a USB port so that I can connect my Creative Zen Touch mp3 player to it.
I have one question however. I have only had cd players with an aux input before, so wanted to try and find one with a USB port. I came across one that mentions the USB port, but also says, "decoding only".
What does this mean? Is the USB port just a glorified aux input in terms of what it does, or will the player only be able to read only certain types of mp3 players?

My understanding is that you can use USB sticks. I would be very surprised if you could plug an MP3 player in.

depends on what u want the player to do. most will allow aux in and simply play the output from ur player through the system, however if you want the headunit to be able to scan content and allow content to be selected then thats a completely different animal, doubt many can do that

No, I just wanted to know if it could be used as a glorified aux input, as I prefer to control tracks by using the mp3 player anyway. Thanks for the info!

looks like I may have been wrong, there is the Eltax CR-550B USB/SD which will scan attached USB drives and SD cards and apparently allow selection of media, but it needs the mp3 player to have a disk-mode like the ipod does, effectively making ur zen just a disk and making no use of the functionality of the player itself

Think I'll just stick with a good old aux input me thinks!

Decoding only probably means that you should only use it to plug in a memory stick and decode (ie play) the music off it.
You shouldn't use the usb socket for other things like charging devices etc
