    HDD Help

Was about to install vista when I realised I was going to format the wrong drive, I instantly cancelled it.

TrueCrypt mounts the dive but now it says needs to be formatted. I think the data is on the drive but it killed the bootloder or something. Can the data be recovered?

EDIT: Cannot use DOS Recovery as i have encrypted the drive and when i recover i need to mount the drive with TrueCrypt
    Thanks All

Could you not take it round to a mates house and copy over the data using their OS?

Yup, maybe the pre files got deleted, as in the file index/references, and the raw data is still on there.

Maybe you can download/buy file/data recovery software and use it while you have another bootable hdd. I don't know if the drive needs to be formatted though to work, probably does.
I'm sure you've thought of that, but just incase you haven't.

Hope it doesn't become a costly error! Am I the only person who feels 'wierd' just before I press the enter button to initiate formatting?

It sounds like the Truecrypt volume header has been deleted/corrupted, so while the rest of your data may still be present and recoverable, it might be impossible to actually decrypt it.

Truecrypt has an option to backup and restore the volume header, but in your case it would only work if you'd already backed it up. Try asking over at the Truecrypt forums and hopefully someone there can help you further:
