i need to change the memory speed, someone please HELP!!

i have bought new RAM and before i install it i need to change the memory speed to 400mhz. when i went to do this in BIOS it was highlighted in blue, indicating that it was locked and i could not change it, how can i change it??

eh i dont really no how to find that out. my computer is a dell dimension 3000. if that helps???

Are you sure that you will need to change it before installing? Most motherboards should be able to detect the SPD settings from the memory, and autoconfigure itself.

Hang on, so am I correct in saying you have not put in your new RAM into the mainboard?

You should just be able to put it all in and it will work straighta away, possibly the BIOS complaining but if you save the BIOS then it will work fine.

I guess bios would automatically adjust its speed by itself? I don't know what your situation's like but I assume you're upgrading to 400mhz right? If that's the case then you're probably running at lower mhz now so probably installing faster memory will not cause any problems. Sorry and please correct me if I am wrong

i have put the new RAM in and it beeps and the moniter or any of the peripherals DONT come on, im sure i need to change the memory speed in the BIOS, as it is set at 333mhz and it needs to be 400mhz, how can i change it??

Maybe you have to change jumper positions then. There must be an instruction somewhere in your mobo manual.

I'm sorry but if it's greyed out then it means you can't Tell me your mobo and I'll have a look at your manual, if it's available online that is.

Yes, if you have set your memory speed to "auto", then disabling it will sometimes allow you to change it to your desired speed.
