    Unhappy Windows install errors

    Hi all,

I've just got my new system up and running, only when I attempt to install XP (on a single SATA drive) I get the following errors:

On a new XP pro disk:
    "***STOP:0x0000007B (0xF78DA524,0xc0000034,....)
    Is this a driver issue?

Using a very old SP1 disk I get:
    "Cannot find winsrv"
    Dont know what this is...

What is going on? Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Skeem

    Oh and system is:
    E6600
    Gigabyte p965 dq6
    Western Dig 250GB Sata2

At what point in the installation process does this happen?

As a first step, I would do a thorough memory check using memtest.

The SP1 disk gets as far as the black windows loading screen with the blue bar (having formatted the partition etc), then falls over with missing winsrv.

The SP2 disk the STOP error occurs as it is loading in the peliminary drivers at the first windows setup screen.

I think the first error is causd by a damaged cd.
The second is possibly because the required drivers are not loaded correctly and causes corruption..

Are other people having trouble with SATA drives?

    hmm..

Which controller are u using (ICH8, Sil or JMicron) and in what mode (IDE AHCI or RAID). I have found that it is best to use AHCI mode and do the F6 driver install, however some 965 boards have boot delays when using this mode. Also if possible I would suggest you only attach bare minimal in the way of drives and disable those controllers not is use for install.

I'm very new to all this SATA stuff, I'm just using the singular drive. The bios is in IDE mode (I think, typing this at work.).

I notice that when the peliminary drivers are being loaded at the setup screen there are a few that mention sata150, but I didn't see any mentioning sata300, or sata2 (unless they were too quick for me.) But tried adding jumper to force drive into sata150 mode but to no avail..

SATA2 mode is only available if using AHCI and possibly RAID but you will see little if any benefit as hard drives never really tax the 150MB/s let alone 300mb/s

Splash was correct, the scratched disk was the problem.

It does seem strange that SP1 works (loads the/some SATA drivers)...but SP2 doesn't...

    Happy now anyway!

I have a very very similar problem with my GA-965P-S3 rev1.0 board.

I have several Windows XP CDs :

One is an SP1 retail original CD.
One is a Dell system restore (it says "incl SP1")
One is the unofficial Windows XP Black DVD (SP2 based)

The first time I installed, I used the Dell system restore, and the install went relatively smoothly. The first time through, while formatting my 320 GB ATA drive, it stuck at 20%. I rebooted, went through the entire install again, and it ran fine. I upgraded some of the drivers using Gigabyte's site, but I am pretty sure I did not update the BIOS or any firmware, only drivers. I left the system running for 6 hours or so and came back to a blue screen with the STOP:0x0000007B 0xF78DA524,0xc0000034. The part after the 7B was exactly the same.

I set up Debian/Ubuntu on the system with no problems.

I tried to check the disk using windows and linux tests and it was fine.

I then tried to install again from the Dell disk, and got the same error. Then I downloaded the Windows XP Black iso and burned a disk (two actually, to make sure there were no disc problems), and had the same result. I then remembered that I had my official store bought Windows XP and tried that. It worked, but I have not tried updating anything. I used a 320 GB SATA drive, but the install only recognized 128 GB of it. I am unsure if updates will allow the rest of the drive to be detected and formatted.

Note, I tried the Dell and Windows XP black discs with NO hard drive installed and had the same errors, so I don't think it is a physical disc error.
