My computer is taking about 30 mins to boot up.

This is after a fresh windows xp install. It hangs for ages on a black screen with a white line which slowly fills at the bottom.

How can i sort this? Is it a HDD problem?

My computer spec in in my sig.

    Please help.

    Thank you in advance.

    Re: Start up problems.

it could be the bios not doing a fast memory check and going through it the slow way, they sometimes default to check the ram after a crash.

    Re: Start up problems.

It goes through a memory check on the first screen that comes up.
It does this for only a couple of minutes and then it hangs on the screen i described in my first post.
Is there anyway i can resolve this?

    Re: Start up problems.

Check in your BIOS to make sure you CPU and Mobo are running at the right speeds. Its possible for these settings to be lost, and the machine to default to something really slow.

Also have a look in Admin Tools>Computer Management>Event Viewer. See if there is something in there that corresponds to the time that the error is present.

I've seen issues like this in the past, but not normally after a fresh install.

When you get into XP have a look in device manager to see if its showing any issues.

Also check the smart status of your HDD to see if its having problems.

I don' think its ram, as that would just crash the machine. That either works or does not.

    Re: Start up problems.

Cheers for all the help guys.

Mysteriously it has stopped hanging now. I left it over night and after days of not working properly, it started working properly...odd!!

    Cheers for the suggestions though.
