Vista - ATI drivers = no longer boots

Updated my display drivers to the latest ones from the ATI site last night, all seemed ok, but when I went to play CS:S I had no sound, odd i thought

I checked everything, nothing muted and the drivers all seemed to be ok

Rebooted the pc, it started up and when logging on, instead of the usual vista chime, i got a lot of static.

So I uninstalled the ATI drivers, rebooted and reinstalled them

I started to get video corruptions, rebooted and now vista wont start up, it gets to the point of nearly loading and just auto reboots

I can get into vista via safe mode, but it does not allow you to uninstall drivers

Does anyone have ideas how to get it working again, or am i looking at a reformat and putting XP64/Linux on..

Can't you set the display device to a standard VGA adaptor (or whatever it's called) in safe mode? Just try to delete it (should uninstall it) in Device Manager?

Unfortunately it would have been much easier if you had PCIe.

Hi Gav, I will try and delete it, but i think the ATI software is the problem as its an all in one package

What would be easier with PCI-E as thats what I currently have, X1900XT-X

I've got a few PCI-e cards here chap, namely 1 NVidia one which u could put in to see if u can boot into windows...

To install it into another PCIe slot (even a 1x slot would work), that way it'll make you reinstall the drivers once Windows has booted... you can ignore it, and just uninstall the drivers from add/remove while you're in Windows.

Sorry, I could have sworn I'd looked at your My System and saw a Gigabyte Intel AGP board. :S

Hi Gav, You did which prompted me to update it!

I will move the card to the 2nd slot then as its an SLI board.

I think I might have to change to a 8800GTS at some point as looking towards a change to linux and ATI doesn't seem to be all that popular...
