XP doesn't keep my desktop setting anymore..why?

Hmm since I switched from singlecore to dualcore yesterday I have nothing but trouble. For example if I change my desktop theme from xp to classic then reboot my pc it always comeback as xp theme without wallpaper. My personal preference is xp theme without eyecandy which looks bit like classic theme with silverish toolbar and buttons but that setting doesn't seem to work either. I have installed msdualcorefix as well as dualcore processor driver and optimizer from AMD, and even reinstalled windows but nothing seem to fix this annoyance. I have opty165 on this system and it holds these settings just fine so why not 4200+? I really can not get it

look in device manager and check the "computer" is set to ACPI multiprocessor PC

if its not change the driver to that and it should be ok.

It says "ACPI multiprocessor PC" in device manager and I also see 2 windows side by side in perfomance tab in taskmanager so I think it's working in dual-core mode

I just started priming to see if it spits out any errors but so far...non

damn, i was hoping that would be the easy fix.

could try clearing the paging file and deleting the contents of the pre fetch folder.

maybe a run of crap cleaner incase its an old temp file causing the conflict.

Thanks gonzo, but I've also tried reinstalling windows and while enviroment is still very much clean, it still does this. And weird thing is it's kind of..random. Sometimes it keeps setting for one session(but very rare) but when I reboot my pc it came back as xp theme again, bah.

BTW, nothing has overclocked(yet)and orthos return no errors. ...But I had one blackscreen when I tried to enter windows . Could be graphic card driver related?

Thanks. Tried that but no joy...

But I've just found out that when I cold boot my pc I get my setting back for some reason and when I just reboot my pc I get this xp theme coming up, weird!

Edit: Nope, it seems it's completely random. I don't know what's going on here...

gonna have to play it step by step, start with a totally fresh install, then set the desktop how you want it and see if it stays. if it does proceed to install graphics driver, reboot and see if it stays.

slow but you know.. thats troubleshooting.

I finally found a workaround at microsoft's help and support, yay.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926152/ja
It seems this page is only available in Japanese so maybe Japanese os specific? Anyway what you have to do is just locate the service called "Themes" and kill it, that's all. Then all good looking xp styles are disabled and you're left with ugly ones.

This is just my guess but I have a feeling that this problem only occurs when following conditions are met.

You have ATI card and using CCC
    You have dualcore processor
    You have Japanese verson XP

If you have similar setup as above could you kindly experiment with "windows classic" theme and post the result? thanks.
