Geil 5-5-5-15 RAM - Lots of errors!

After buying my new PC, I installed everything successfully, but am experiencing random crashes in Firefox and World of Warcraft (the only 2 programs I've really installed yet!). I've run 3D Mark 05 and 06, and PC Mark 05 with no crashes, but when running Memtest86+ v1.70, I'm getting plenty of errors, 3302 in 2 passes in fact, breaking down as follows:

Test 3: 73 Errors
Test 4: 636 Errors
Test 5: 1628 Errors
Test 6: 880 Errors
Test 7: 84 Errors
Test 8: 1 Error

Obviously this means I got a completely duff stick (all seems to be located at the ~1.5gb mark), just wondering what I should say to the company that supplied it (MicroDirect). Are they any good for returns, and especially quick turnarounds? I've finally got a decent PC, and this happens!

Not sure what MD are like for returns... not heard anything negative about them. Just tell them your system kept crashing and when you tested the memory with Memtest it found loads of errors, so can you RMA it.

Got to double-check voltages and speeds on the RAM, but I can't see that it would be causing this many errors out of the box!

give them a call and tell them that you bought those modules from them and explain that you were getting random blue screens and instablility issues and were suggested to run memtest86 from a forum and this came up with tons of errors and so you would like an RMA number.
Simple , shouldn't have any problems with that at all!

Geil have an excellent returns policy, just give them a call - State the problem (instability) state the amount of errors recevied in Memtest (they would want you to run memtest anyway)

As all sticks are under lifetime warranty just request an RMA, they have a decent turnover time aswell.

Up the voltage a little to them - the RAM may not be faulty. The board could be undervolting, its fairly common

I bought my set of ram 3 years ago, so its out of the shop's guarantee, plus most of the time when people take things back they have to wait a long time in the quenes and the staff to test first.

The last time I went in for a HDD caddy, I took my existing case in too so that I could get a macthing one, but they said they were all the same. When I took it back I had to wait for over an hour to get my £8 or so refund............

Thirdly its a long way to go to get to MD....

bugger than, that means that I'll need to go to MD then.

D'Oh... This is me feeling silly... Turns out that the P5N-E mobo has a faulty 'auto-detect' option for just about everything to do with RAM. When I set it up with the correct timings and voltage, the errors went away.

And I thought that Asus were supposed to be stable.

Well, they are of course, but it's annoying to have found this out after buying the mobo. Just one crash since I entered everything manually, screen froze, mouse froze, nothing happened til I hit a few buttons on the keyboard, then the computer speaker beeped once, then nothing. A complete reboot was the only option.

/edit: There's a geilusa.com forum, but it's run by fans, with the blessing of Geil. They're pretty helpful, anyway.

If you are going to RMA it, do it before you have had the RAM for 28 days.

Once that point is passed, MD will take 30 WORKING DAYS to replace your RAM, from the day they confirm its faulty.
