rip a dvd to an avi or standard movie file..
auto gordian knot or Dr. DivX 2.0, there is other ways/methods
http://www.doom9.org
loads of guides and software.
Another bump for Doom9 - great site!
whatever floats your boat mate..you know what i'm asking for.
it makes all the difference to the tools appropriate for the task
"i want to do some diy, what tool shall i use"
"erm... depends on the job?"
"pedant!"
""
see the problem?
if you want to make something playable on external devices, then one tool with one batch of settings is appropriate
another class of device? another set of tools
specific software player requirements (such as subtitles)? a third set of tools
there's no one-size-fits answer, since the question is vague
Hmmm ok..
Well Mainly i want it as a backup on my PC but obviously I don't want to store them as 5gb files.
Dont care about subtitles or anything like that.
It's possible i'd want to put it on my ZEN Vision:M but i'm not too bothered.
edit: this was a rather uninspired 1000th post lol
I use Apollo DVD ripper...
It is great!!!!,
also the DVD burner is good.
autoGK worked pretty well in the end but i'll have a look at the apollo one.
EDIT- I'm not paying for it..ARE YOU MAD!!?

There are lots of ways of re-encoding the video. Doom9 has useful guides, though for most things you need a fair bit of technical knowledge.
Dr Divx is very easy to use, just 1 click re-encoding. It is fast and gives good results. Much easier than playing with all the settings in the other apps.
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming. i5-6500. 16gig Ripjaw 2400. Samsung 950pro NMVe 250gig+ 1tb Intel 660p. GTX Titan. Corsair TX650M.
939 3800 X2 | 2gig corsairXMS 3200C2
1950XT | 500gig,320,200,160
Plextor DVD burner | Yamaha CRW-F1 CD-drive
Thermaltake Xaser 3 w 480W FSP | X-fi fatal1ty
Things have moved on since I first joined...
Another thing to bare in mind is that pretty much everything on Doom9 is geared towards high quality re-compression at full resolution, there isn't much in the way of encoding for mobile devices. Although most of the tools can be used for this anyway.
