DVD to AVI

Anyone know a good program or guide for making a dvd into an avi or divx etc..

I keep downloading things that don't work and its getting on my nerves lol.

AVI's a container format, nothing more

what is it exactly you're trying to achieve?

recontainering to AVI is simple

and .VOB is already a standard movie file - it's MPEG2-PS

perhaps what you actually want to do is recompress movies to store on disk efficiently?

if you want to make something playable on external devices, then one tool with one batch of settings is appropriate

another class of device? another set of tools

specific software player requirements (such as subtitles)? a third set of tools

there's no one-size-fits answer, since the question is vague

Well Mainly i want it as a backup on my PC but obviously I don't want to store them as 5gb files.

Dont care about subtitles or anything like that.

It's possible i'd want to put it on my ZEN Vision:M but i'm not too bothered.

on windows? decide how much work you want to put in r.e. quality of output, then pick gordian knot or autogk.

I use Apollo DVD ripper...
It is great!!!!,
also the DVD burner is good.

autoGK worked pretty well in the end but i'll have a look at the apollo one.

There are lots of ways of re-encoding the video. Doom9 has useful guides, though for most things you need a fair bit of technical knowledge.

Dr Divx is very easy to use, just 1 click re-encoding. It is fast and gives good results. Much easier than playing with all the settings in the other apps.

Another thing to bare in mind is that pretty much everything on Doom9 is geared towards high quality re-compression at full resolution, there isn't much in the way of encoding for mobile devices. Although most of the tools can be used for this anyway.
