    DVI to HDMI Help

Recently bought a 32" HD LCD TV (Acoustic Solutions) from Argos which has a HDMI Input.
My PC has an XFX (Nvidia) FX5200 Graphics card with a DVI-I output.

I originally tried a DVI-I (Dual Link) to HDMI cable and the PC could detect the television panel but I couldnt get a picture, just a blank screen.

So i bought a DVI-D (Single Link) to HDMI cable and again I cannot get a picture even when the PC first boots-up.

I have even tried a Dell PC with an Intergrated Grahics Card (again with a DVI-I output with the same results.

Have I bought the wrong cables or is my TVs HDMI input knackered.

I have thought of connecting through the component inputs but Im pretty sure that a DVI-I to component cable wont work from a PC graphics card.

I've got my HDTV connected to my HTPC via DVI-D to HDMI with no issues.

Are you sure the HDMI port is Ok and on? My TV has the option to switch off connections that you don't use, maybe for some reason your was off by default?

Is there a second HDMI port you can try?

Do you have, or can you borrow, another HDMI device, like an upscaling DVD player?

Have you tried a VGA or S-Video connection to the TV (if your grahpics card has the options) just to see if the picture is there?

Finally, have you tried connecting up and connecting a PC monitor to the other connection on the card? Maybe you'll need to set something in Windows?

No unfortunately it only has 1 HDMI port.
I dont have another device to try unfortunately and I dont think anybody else i know has either.

I can view the desktop using a composite cable from my graphics card break-out box to my tv so there definitely is a picture.

I have connected the pc to a 17 inch flat panel from my DVI port to the VGA input on that panel and it works fine.

So Im left with the option that my FX5200 is not outputting a digital signal or both cables are faulty or the hdmi input is not working or disabled.

Havent seen anywhere on any menus the option to re-enable it tho.

    Thanks for you help

    Good point Steve B.

Whilst it should accept a higher res that the panel supports, and downscale, maybe it doesn't. Try your TV's native res & see what happens.

quite a lot of panels will *only* support hd resolutions over dvi - so try 1280x720

I tried various resolutions last night with no success using my DVI-I to HDMI cable.

I tried the new Forceware with the latest drivers and it again detected the panel , size and max resolution but no pic.
Im going to try my DVI-D cable to night as I just have a feeling I might get somewhere.
Thanks for all your help guys - will let you know if I ever solve it.

does 'various resolutions' include 1280x720? some sets i've seen will *only* support that, 1960x1080 (or whatever that res is) and 480p over dvi.

    Yeah
The Forceware setup lists all the HD resolutions, and I tried em all.

Switch the cable to a DVI-D to HDMI with no success, so either my graphics card is outputting a digital signal or the HDMI input on the TV is knackered.

Cant understand how the PC correectly identifies the size and max resolution of the panel if the HDMI is buggered.

Are you starting from a cold boot here? Many Gfx cards with dual outputs will only actually output to the one that is connected to a screen at boot up.

Might be worth going through the TV setup menu and seeing what options you can choose that effect the inputs.

It sounds like either a setting or a duff port but duff ports are EXTREMLY rare.

Just a bit of an update.
I have upgraded the LCD to a Philips 42" and again the PC detects the new panel but refuses to show a picture.

My PC has an XFX (Nvidia) FX5200 Graphics card with a DVI-I output.

I have tried a DVI-I (Dual Link) & a DVI-D (Single Link) to HDMI cable and just a blank screen.

I am wondering if I should try a hdmi-hdmi cable with a DVi to hdmi convertor

some teevees will ONLY allow an HDCP-protected signal through the HDMI port

not unless your graphics card were HDCP-compliant.

i'm not saying it's DEFINITELY the problem in your case, i'm saying it's a known problem with some sets
