Virtual Memory setting.

Hello guys.

I've been messing around with some of my PC settings today in order to get an application to work.

I saw a step on the internet to set Virtual Memory to "System managed size", so I did that and it didn't improve, so I tried to remember what the previous setting was and I can't remember... I think it was this :



Does this setting look right to you ??

I have 2GB of RAM btw...

Please help me !

There is nothing wrong with that, what are you trying to run that requires more than your 2GB of ram and still wants more?.

paging file as rule of thumb is 1.5x the amount of installed ramm you want a 3gb paging file

Keeping it a static size like that is good, and 1.5x your ram is meant to be the best as GoNzO said, but the exact amount shouldn't really matter.

What are you trying to run that keeps crashing? Any specific error messages that might give us some clues?

I used to mess around with the virtual mem on my win 98 system, but it wasn't that great.
On my Win XP64 system I let the system manage the page file and I've not had any probs to be honest. (Personally, I'd leave it to windows)
If you're experienceing problems such as freeze or lag then check the ram or do some house keeping on your Hard drive.

either let it manage itself, or set it to 3096mb and forget about it.

Can anyone explain why the more RAM you have, the bigger the page file you need?

I've seen that 1.5x rule of thumb before, so

1GB of actual RAM, 1.5GB page file
2GB of actual RAM, 3GB page file

But surely if I have 2GB of RAM, I am less likely to need the page file so why would I need more of it (1.5GB more in the above example)?

I am obviously missing something... please explain!

the rule of thumbs exists because when you run out of memory you need to move the whole application into page file. there fore you need at least the size plus about a half for anything else
