windows file missing

i recently built my pc up and we had faulty ram. the computer had checksum errors and crashed so we had to restart the comp and put new ram in. now with the ne ram we can get into bios and it appears on screen that windows was last closed unexpectedly, do i want to start windows normally or at last setting which worked. wenever i choose either option this appears : windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe
please reinstall a copy of the above file.

can any1 help i just wanna use the pc :0

Had it myself a couple of times over the years & could be any number of things. You've just got to rule them out one by one i'm afraid. First step to try (imo) is using the recovery console to copy the file across from the installation CD.

Put the XP disk in, and reboot, but log into BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the CD first.

When it does, let it loads all the files and then when you're asked if you want to repair or install, choose repair.

Now, you'll end up on a DOS screen.

Type dir nothing else, and you'l get a list of the directory, all the programs youcan use in dos,

From memory, you need the fixboot program.
To scroll down the list, i think you hit return....you'll see it.

When you know what its' called (sure it's fixboot) type the word and hit return.

It'll run a windows boot sector fixing program and put ant files in that are dead.

I did this last week when my Raptor threw a hissy fit for no reason

ye fixed it now, reset the cmos and fiddled about in bios and somehow it corrected itself
