    Vista Temperature Increase

    Hi,

I recently upgraded to vista from XP and have just installed and ran core temp.exe just to be nosey more than anything. I am running an E6300 at stock and the idle temperatures seem a good few degrees (5-6) higher than those of XP. Currently Vista is idling at 42 Average

Anyone else noticed this on there vista system?

It maybe just because it seems warmer in the house tonigt, but thought I would ask all the same.

My System is on the left

A different OS wouldnt effect your temps.

What may have happened is the way Vista calibrates then reads the temps to you as opposed to how XP does it.

Sorry to disagree with you so quickly again hunny

As you have just installed Vista several things will be running in the background (The main one being the Indexing service trashing at your HD).

Also Vistas Aero interface (if you use it), not only uses your GPU, but a part of your CPU like all programs. This will put more load on it -> higher temps.
Its the exact same reason that laptop's are having huge cuts in their operating time when running on a battery under Vista.

Vista uses a lot more RAM and CPU when being "idle" to try and keep the system speedy (caching, defragging, indexing ect. in the background), which would easily explain the small raise in temperature

There was a comment by someone at MS that went along the lines of "people shouldn't ask why Vista uses more resources than XP, but why XP wasn't using these resources in the first place to make the computing experience better for the user" - Although I cant find the exact quote, it gets the idea across

    Sorry agent but i retort

There is no way that Aero and a few background systems running is going to put 6 degrees on the overall temperatures.

1 or max but not 6.

Sorry - I'm with agent on this one!

The OS and the applications will affect system temp. My laptop runs teh cooling fan permanently when a certain screen saver kicks in - and I had a Word file with several macros in it that did the same thing.

On a more practical note, my linux system idles at about 27C - if I start playing back DVDs or encoding MP3s, the temperature goes up to about 60C (assuming the temperature monitoring is correct) and then drops again once I have finished doing that (it is the encoding that is process heavy) Watching the CPU loading shows that it correlates with the temperature graph.

5-6 degrees is hardly anything, really.
Given the ambient temperature the last few days too, it makes perfect sense.

Vista does use more resources when idle over XP - even Microsoft admit that. More resources uses = higher temperature. An OS puts load on the system like all programs. I fail to see what there is to debate about it?

Of course the temps will go up if encoding or or during DVD playback...thats not the issue.
The op just said the temps are higher using Vista generally.
I dont buy it personally but we shall see soon. Im sure someone will write something officially on it.

It only takes a slight load(<10%) to increase the coretemp by 5-10 degrees, especially if the load is enough to switch out of speedstep/C1 into full speed. Also if you've just installed vista it uses the CPU a lot over the first few days, doing various vista things. It should drop back to similar levels as XP eventually. It did for me anyway.

Yeah it has dropped a little and probably as said the higher ambient temperature is playing a part.

As said though a few degrees higher is hardly worth worrying about

I was just curious to see if anyone else had experienced anything similar

Blitzen, I was using that as an example of how running foreground applications will raise core temp, so will running additional background applications, so if Vista is doing more 'OS' type stuff in the background, then the CPU is more active (less idle time) and the temperature will be higher.

Aplogies for not expressing myself more clearly.
