P5K Continuous tone at first light

I just assembled the following system:
Asus P180
Corsair 620W PSU
Q6600
Tuniq Tower 120
Asus P5K Premium
4x2GB Patriot PC6400 RAM
Evga 8800Ultra
4x750GB Seagate SATA drives
PX760A DVD Burner

On first power up I'm getting a continuous tone and nothing else. Not beeping, but a continuous, never ending tone.

I've tried placing a single stick of memory in slot A1 and also tried removing BIOS battery for several minutes / setting the jumper to the "clear" position.

Both 24-pin and 6-pin power connectors are attached. 6-pin PCIE cable from PSU is attached to graphics card.

Any suggestions? This is the first system I've tried to assemble so please be kind.

Is it bolted in the case? If so check nothings shorted out. I usually test a board for a few days outside the case.

Have you tried all the sticks one at a time in different slots?

Unplug every thing thats not needed, and start from there any cable can be faulty.

Cpu fan plugged into the header?

Take the graphics out and cycle the board, see if it gets further.

I agree, sounds like a short, and the first place I would look is the I/O shield. Take it out and clip off all of the loose stands of metal.

Then take out the board, and make sure that all the motherboard standoffs are screwed in as far as theyll go and they are all tight.

Also check that the RAM and GPU are seated properly.

Thanks for the replies. The BIOS is now coming up and seeing 8GB of memory.

It appears that the problem was related to the 6-pin PCIE power going to the gfx card. I moved the plug from one of the two sockets to the other and now it works. I'm not sure if those two connectors are different or if the connector was just not properly seated in the first place.

Now I'm onto the RAID. The system does see the 4 SATA drives on SATA1, 2, 5, and 6. I've gone to the SATA Configuration item in the BIOS and set the "Configure SATA As" item to [RAID]. The MB manual says to then select the item "Onboard Serial-ATA BOOTROM".

I don't see that item on the page. Any ideas where that is?

Two PCI-e connector to the Ultra right? Just checking.

One of the reasons for that, Ive seen it before, is that the two PCI-e graphice leads can be on different rails. The original rail may have been shared with the motherboard or CPU and overloaded. Or it might have been a bad connection like you say.

Why have you set that to RAID? Are you planning on using an array?

Yes, an Ultra. I'd hope with a 620W supply that the reason was just a bad connection of the 6-pin connector. Maybe the 4-SATA drives are sucking power from that rail too.

I do plan to use this as RAID10. If you look at page 5-35 of the MB manual (add the usual http header to dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5K_Premium/e3303_p5k_premium.zip) it talks about enabling the "Onboard Serial-ATA BOOTROM" item.

I did enter the Intel-Matrox configuration (cntl-I) and was able to create a RAID10 volume using the 4 disks. When I get a chance later I'll look at the BOOT-related BIOS entries, maybe that stuff is in there.

Right gotcha, Id say the BOOTROM is the bios screen that flashed up and you've just gone into to create the array. Now you have to select the RAID as the boot disk.

Btw, where did you get the board, Tekheads?

One question, if someone could answer as I've never tried. Suppose I had three drives on the Intel RAID controller and combined two in RAID 0, can I still boot from the third one totally separate from the new RAID drive? Or does the third HAVE to be part of the array?

My understanding is that you can have some disks configured as part of a RAID and as individual SATA drives. With the Ultra plugged in I'm not sure you can get access to all 6 SATA connectors. You need to use right-angle connectors to get at 1 and 2 which cover 3 and 4.

The P5K premium (vs Deluxe, etc) seemed to be the only P5K (DDR2) series that supported RAID10. The deluxe does 0, 1, and possibly 5. There is a seperate JMicron controller on the MB to support the ESATA ports on the rear panel.

Thanks for that, Im planning one of these for a Q6600. The premium is a bit hard to find in the UK at the moment. Apparently its pretty much a development of the Deluxe, fixing a few of its problems. I have a GTX so hopefully I can squeeze in the sata's.

Interesting what you say about RAID, the Asus specs say both do 0,1,5,10

The manual for the Deluxe makes no mention of 5 or 10 and says they use different southbridges.
ICH8R vs ICH9R. Which is strange as I could have sworn the Deluxe has the ICH9R as well. Sounds like a typo in the manual, I would think the Deluxe also does 5 and 10.

Raid 5 and 10 are supported on the P5K deluxe.

The jmicron controller has 2 x sata 2, 2 x esata and 1 x ide. If I remember right, the ultra covers one of the intel sata sockets and one of the jmicron sata sockets.
