    Cant move this file

Ok, first of i realise that that the title of this thread makes me sound abit simple but its not quite that simple sadly

I have a iso zipped up in a rar file i just cant move (tryed extracting the ISO and moving that... but still no luck). Its a 4.37GB file and i want to move it off the p.c its on to either my external hard drive or another p.c but i cant do it for the life of me. So far i have tryed it 2 different ways, the first is moving it onto my external hard drive and the other is moving it onto a networked laptop through sharing folders but both times i get the same problem... the problem is that it says the drive that im trying to move the file to is full.... BUT there not. My external hard drive is a Freecom Classic SL 250GB hard drive and still has 150GB left and the laptop still has 20GB left. I have also tran

    So whats going on?

i have deleted alot of files from my external hard drive (around 10Gigs worth) but still no luck (im able to put other files on it just not this 1), i have also tryed defraging both of the external drive and the laptop and have totally reformated the p.c with the rar on (loosing so had to back it up again)

and just incase it matters no the rar file does not have a password.

anyway does any one have any idea what the problem is and how i can fix it or get round it? thanks

worth a guess, but most external (quote me if im wrong, i dont even have one ) hdd's are FAT32? and the max filesize on this filesystem is 4GB (http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm)

might want to check the filesystem

Yup, sounds like a FAT32 problem. Happened to me recently and i knew about it, i just forgot that that particular external drive was FAT32 as opposed to NTFS

If it is a filesystem issue (which is most likely) a quick and dirty solution would be to use something like The File Splitter (search google for it) or winrar/winzip to recompress your iso into two smaller parts to move.

Can WinRAR open the file and then re-save it to the external drive in chunks?

I know it can create multi volume archives, just not sure if it can split an existing archive like that.

EDIT: 1GB chunks are good as it also keeps them below ther file size for certain DVD formats. Thats why .vob files are split at 1GB

When you compress your image using WinRAR, in the Archive parameter and names window, go to the General tab, click on the Split to volumes, bytes combo box, and select an appropriate size. WinRAR will compress the file into several smaller archives of the size selected and append rar1, rar2, ... , rarn to the smaller archives.

To get round it, try MoveOnBoot, had it recomended to me by a fellow HeXus member many moons ago (I believe it was guru Buff if my memory serves). Allows you to move or delete the file.

    Works a treat.

Wouldn't work in this situation. The file system of the disk itself does not support file sizes of >4GB. The only ways to move the file would be to either change the file size or change the file into smaller file(s).

You can extract the files in an iso then copy them over in their respective directories.
