Hi peeps.

Finally I can give something back!:D

I bought an ASUS Silent Square Pro, to cool my C2D E6420, but after overclocking to 2.667Ghz the temperatures went up and so did my eyebrows. I was getting 60 Degress under load with Orthos.:surprised:

Having read a few articles, it became apparent that maybe the HS wasn't flat enough, so I purchased some Artic Silver 5 and set about lapping the heat sink.:bowdown:

That done, installed it...temps were wild at first, upto 60 Degrees under normal use, then settled to around 44-48 Degrees.

So, tonight I decided try something that I read in an article, which stated that there had been several reports of problems fitting this HSF to 775 Sockets and suggested two shims of credit card, between the top of the actual heatsink and the clamp effort, that holds it down, to increase the force.

Apon removing the cooler, I saw this:

Obviously, only part of the HS was actually touching the CPU and the same was reflected on the bottom of the HS.

After some careful examination, I could see that the mount for the Cooler, was actually stopping it from sitting correctly and was fowling the Heat Pipes on one side, causing it to sit at an angle:

The problem is casued by the outside set of holes, with the shortest distance between them, so I removed these sections with a file:

As you can see, the HS now sits fully, down in the hole and is level:

So, I also added two shims of credit card (happened to have just cancelled one!), to increase the clamping force, stuck together and to the HS with some TIM (coz' it's sticky, no other reason).

It now clamps nice and snug. On startup, temps are now 33 Degrees each core, normal use, ambient temp is around 20-22 degrees.

Considering the TIM has had almost no time to burn in etc, I am hoping that these temps will drop some more over time and with a few burn in cycles.

Just discovered that TAT can also load the Cores (DUH!), so...at the moment at 80% on each core, CoreTemp and TAT are reporting 48 Degrees.

Been running like that for 40 mins now.

What's the best way to bed this TIM in? And am I right to think that temps will drop as it beds in?

I have also dropped ASUS a line, to get them to get in touch so I can explain it to them. They might give a damn, might not!

The paste needs to cycle through the temps a few times for it to do its thing, so just leave it and it will get there, but you wont see much of a difference.

The Asus Silent Square Pro I have just been looking at fitting seemed to sit fairly flush in the mounting bracket - was at very slight angle but did not looks at bad as Skeets.

I really don't know what to do for a cooler, would be a great help if my CPU had arrived from Scan but thats now not looking likely until next week!

Really wanting to find something to try out with my E6700 on my P5K3 so I can have a play with my new system.

It might be sitting flush, but is it sitting in fully?

If anything is touching teh heat pipes, then no, it isn't.

The actual heat sink should come quite some way through the mount.

You're right, the bracket is touching the heat pipes. As this won't fit mounted the correct way on my mobo I think I ma going back to looking for an alternative.

What wont fit?

Explain...

The black bracket for holding the heatsink will not fit, the it streches out too far so catches the heatpipe on the outer edge of the mobo and cannot be fastened down.

Can that not be modified? The bracket I mean?

The way it sits on the mobo I would need to cut off/file of the clips that hold on the retaining clip so don't think a modification is possible.

It may just fit if I rotate it 90 degrees so the fan blows up rather than our the back but then the bracket does look to be touching the resistors along the edge of the CPU socket.
