    ICH9 Changeout to ICH9R....possible?

I was wondering if I would be able to get a ICH9R chip to replace my ICH9 chip?, and would the cost be prohibitive?...maybe just get another board? I've never looked under the Southbridge heatsink to see if it is just in a socket, or if it is soldered in. Board I have is an ASUS P5KC

Ok then..thank you, looks like my daughter gets this P5KC board for her build. LOL I guess i'll do the build with my old Abit Fatal1ty AA8XE for my grand daughter.... and I'll get another board with a ICH9R in it for me.

Even if you could source a chip, remove the old chip and solder on a new one - all without damaging the board - the BIOS wouldn't have any knowledge of the extra functionality, so you wouldn't receive it

If you could replace the chip, a BIOS flash wouldn't be too taxing

.... but it would be cheaper, and quicker to buy a new board

not unless you've got a very fine-tipped soldering iron, and the worlds steadiest hands

Wouldn't suffice, the P5KC isn't the same PCB layout as other boards in the P5K series.

Your best bet would be to disassemble the P5KC and P5K-E BIOSes, and try and create some kind of hybrid of the two.

Similar thing used to be done back in the PC-DL days, trying to get Nocona Xeon support by adapting the NCCH-DL BIOS. No idea about the specifics, but I did once end up with a board which didn't recognise its southbridge - so no USB, floppy, IDE or SATA support. Certainly made flashing it back to a working one 'interesting'

    Ahh, didn't know that
Quite unusual for them to use multiple PCB's these days. I'd assume the economy's of scale would be fairly big.

As for hacked BIOS's.....I had enough arsing about with the romsip table on the NF7-S BIOS's. Learnt loads, but I don't really want to go there again (its mostly out of my depth)

The P5K-E and P5K Deluxe share have same PCB.

The P5KC however is a DDR2 and DDR3 combo board, and has 6 memory slots in total, so has a different PCB.
