Maxtor External HDD + Win7

Can anyone advise how I might be able to get a Maxtor External HDD (I have two, a 160GB mini oneTouch IV and a 640GB Desktop oneTouch IV plus), to work with windows 7 64 bit.

They have a lot of data saved on them from XP days, but the Maxtor software doesn't work properly with win 7 so I can't get the drive to decrypt and let me copy the files off it.

Seagate suggest wiping the drive and using 3rd party software - they seem to be missing the point.

I'm hoping it might be like those games where you need to copy a file to a different directory to get the thing to work, but I've no idea where to start.

Any help much appreciated.

Can't you just install XP temporarily, grab the files and then take Seagate's suggestion?

Xp licence was OEM so won't work on my new machine

I suspect you are going to have to get hold of an XP machine, or use an edition of Win7 in XP compatibility mode.

You can install but not activate. You get the 30 days grace which should be long enough to get your data.

Now i like the sound of that, but it would be nice to be able to just use the software on win7. Considering the drive is only 2 years old and still fresh as a daisy I'm seriously disappointed by Seagate's attitude. Makes me want to boycott them deliberately.

I have a similar issue with a Canon scanner which I resolved by using VueScan - I won't buy Canon again though.

It's software for scanning. It's basically the only option left when you have a perfectly good scanner that the vendor won't support. You can read about it at;

But, no it won't help you recover your files sadly.

Can you use the Windows XP Virtual Machine in Windows 7 mate?
