Powered USB Powered Hub Spinning Fans

I have just bought a generic powered usb hub for my laptop (a Fujitsu Seimens Amilo). The other day I noticed that the cpu fan was spinning even though the laptop was off. When I disconnected the powered hub, the fan stopped.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks

It doesn't sound normal to me.. You say it's a powered hub - does that mean it's powered by the mains?

I'd get in contact with either Fujitsu or the people that make the USB hub.

That is really odd, USB is on 5V and the CPU will be on a temperature dependent voltage upto 12V, so the two mixing can't be good!

If it has a mains adapter try it plugged in without the mains. In fact try any other USB device and what results you get on different things - the more info the better.

Try BIOS and see if there is a setting to turn off power to USB when the computer is off (VCC or something it's called I think), it's a jumper setting on normal motherboards but you might be lucky. These shouldn't be related but it's my only constructive thought...

    Thanks for the replies.

The USB hub is powered by the mains, I disconnected the hub from the mains and the problem goes away and the devices attached to the hub still work (bluetooth adapter, joystick and wireless mouse) but obviously they are taking power from the laptop which I am trying to avoid (the laptop powerpack gets very hot!)

There are no setting in the BIOS regarding USB which I admit suprises me.

I will live with the hub not being powered but like you I find it strange, I suppose that is computers for you, Vista is always suprising me with what it does!!!

    Thanks
