You mean sounds are getting distorted echo/reverb like effect on top of them? I also think it's a driver related problem like directhex pointed out above. Or maybe unwanted effect applied through realtek sound effect manager@control panel. Just fiddle around effect setting in the manager and see if that makes any difference. If you still can't get rid of the noise then update your sound driver to the latest one. BTW, do you know which motherboard your computer has, grimmy55? I think this is the driver you're looking for for your onboard Realtek ALC861 soundchip but not 100% sure. Knowing exact motherboard model number will help locating the right driver more easily.

Just go on the asus website and download the driver for you mobo.

Also check the speakers just to make sure its not them. Also turn off any effects in the effects tab of the realtek manager.

Ok, so should be this one then. Just choose the right one depending which OS you're using.

for realtek you're better off downloading from realtek.com.tw than from the motherboard manufacturer, in my experience

If you've got an audio cable from your cd drive to the motherboard then I'd suggest you disconnect it. I've had enough interference issues that I don't connect it any more on a new build.
If you can't keep up, stick with reality...
