    Question How to get data from a functioning HD

    Yes it's not a failed HD! (I think)

    1) My infant son pulled the plug on one system Gigabyte GA7N400 Mboard (while turned off I think) and its backup battery was flat.

    2) Next time it booted (win XP pro) there was a "new hardware detected" message and it asked for the RAID drivers to be installed - which task I deferred .

    3) Subsequent time the PC would not boot windows instead, halting at the RAID setup option.

    4) blowing through resulted in reset loop

    5) the drive is not visible in the raid manual configuation menu, although it is reported in the boot
    sequence

    6) The IDD scan repots no drives and the windows install disk won't start.
    one time only it reported a corrupt or missing windows system file but then went back to previous behaviour

    It wiil not boot in safe mode

    It will not boot with safe BIOS defaults

    power disconnect and restart did not fix

    reseating cards and memory did not fix

    It does boot with a bootable floppy but I can access only floppy drive

    I took the drive out and put on the 2nd sata port of a simlar system but with an AN7 Mboard and the drive apears to work and most files can be read.

    The problem is that I am denied access to the desktop file - I suppose because it was set private and
    was not shared - and of course thats the stuff I want.

    The 2nd system won't boot with the foriegn drve as primary (loops from windows timer).

    I had 100's of hours work backed up on two systems but have been caught out by quick successive failures.

    It seems to me these are the self help possibilities to get the data;

    A) find a way to get access to the denied files with HDrive on the second sytem
    B)figure out how to install the Hdrive as primary on the 2nd system so it boots
    C) get the first system working but keeping the data on the HD - but is the motherboard US?
    ==> D) replace the motherboard with same? Can I do that and keep the HD data intact?

    What do you think?

    I believe you can take ownership of any directory and its associated sub-directories, assuming you have admin privileges on the machine you are using, here's how I think it's done;

    First, open any folder and go to Tools -> Folder Options, and the view tab - and select 'Use simple File Sharing (Recommended)'

    Then, select the directory you want to take ownership of, right click and go to properties and the security tab, and click the Advanced button.

    Go to the owner tab, and your current username should be in the list in the "Change owner to:" section, click the 'Replace Owner on Subcontainers and objects' box and hit OK, and OK again to get out of the properties dialog box...it should then apply those settings and let you get at the files.

    I think thats right, hope it helps

    Re: How to get data from a functioning HD

    Failing that, you can boot using something like Linux, which will flat out ignore any file permissions you have set...knoppix would do the job for you if you have a USB hard disk to extract your files to

    Just a point here - You need to make sure that box is unchecked, not checked
