High CPU temperature readings -> ECS PF1

Hi all,

(first of all, there used to be an ecs.care@hexus topic here...no? I can't find it...)

I have a ECS PF1 rev 1.0 motherboard which i bought used recently just to move my Intel P4 2.8 HT processor in it and replace my older Jetway mATX board, because it wasn't supporting Dual Channel DDR.

The PF1 had its very first Bios release in it so i decided to upgrade the Bios to the latest version 1.3a (according to the Bios file list on the ECS support/downloads webpage).

Since i updated my PF1 bios to version 1.3a, the temperature readings of my CPU "went up to the sky" by showing ultra high temperatures both at idle cpu or full load.

I get 60C at Windows XP or while in Bios settings screen idle, and this goes above 71C while in a game, unitl it reaches 75C and finally the PC shuts down (because there is the setting for automatic shutdown if overheated activated in the bios).

I'm definitely sure that the Bios version is responsible for this...Unfortunately i didn't keep the old bios that the mobo came with.

I "downgraded" the bios from 1.3a to 1.2h and the temperature readings dropped significantly but not to the normal levels of the P4 2.8 HT.

This cpu was running at my old motheboard @ 38C idle. Now with this Motherboard and the bios downgrade to version 1.2h it idles @51c !

I think that stil this older bios gives wrong temperature readings for this cpu.

Is there any way to solve the problem?

I NEED to have accurate temperature readings on my PC as any other user.

Does this forum still have communication with that guy "JonE" from ECS who helped other users in the past?

Any other ideas?

Quick question, did you clean and reaply thermal paste on the cpu/HSF ?
Double checked that the HSF is seated correctly?

Although changeing the BIOS version effecting the temp readings does look very suspious.
Might be best to contact ECS directly.

Yes before doing anything else i did clean both the CPU and the Fan/heatsink then reapplied Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste according to Arctic Silver's documentation.

This is not an issue as i triple checked it...

Switching Bios version from 1.3a to 1.2h did a difference of about 15C in the Bios readings at idle same for the Lavalys Everest Ultimate from within Windows XP.

Bios 1.3a certainly has a problem, but i'm afraid that the older version i downgraded to (that is 1.2h) is still bugged as this CPU (Intel Northwood P4 2.8 HT) usually idles at around 38-40C. Surely never at 61C !!!

I will try to contact ECS although the board is old...i hope they still support it.
