Western Digital Hard Drive Acoustic Management
I want to turn on the acoustic management on my WD 5000AAKS. It is disabled by default. I have read that Hitachi FTool works on this drive but i cant get it to work. Must be something to do with the SATA controller on the P5K.
Does anyone know any other software that will work on this drive?
Thanks.

Re: Western Digital Hard Drive Acoustic Management
I just did some searching on this subject and I came across this information on another forum discussing all about this subject, you may find it has something of interest...
http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums...3b060fa461894a
In particular, it says that nForce chipsets may prevent some utilities from correctly enabling the acoustic setting.
Further down the thread, a link points to this software http://www.techpowerup.com/systool/ and claims it will work for turning on acoustic management....
Don't know if you have seen this information yet or not, but it might be worth a try, have a read...
good luck !

Thanks but I have tried Systool. Didnt work. P5K doesnt use the nforce chipset.

Tried this ? http://hddguru.com/content/en/softwa...01.22-HDDScan/
I am seeing a number of posts on other forums, that claim they have managed to set Acoustic Management to ON with the drive you have...
Re: Western Digital Hard Drive Acoustic Management
I know others have done it. It must be due to the SATA controller on these boards it wont work.
Re: Western Digital Hard Drive Acoustic Management
Try changing the harddrive setting in BIOS from AHCI to Enhanced / Compatible / Standard mode?
Re: Western Digital Hard Drive Acoustic Management
For those with the same motherboard and hard drive I tried lots of software without any success. Tried setting SATA to different modes too.
The only program that could actually change the setting was hdparm for windows. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdparm
Setting the acoustic management to quiet makes a big difference. Only problem is the setting doesnt save so each time you shut down or reboot you need to set it again. I just edited the batch file and put in the relevant command so that each time the program is run it automatically sets the acoustic management to quiet.

nickp8 - thanks for the link.
I'll try the software as I think my Samsung drive isn't as quiet as I think it should be.
Re: Western Digital Hard Drive Acoustic Management
amjedm if Hitachi FTool works for you use that as that is the best tool to use. Should also save the setting to the drive.
