New E8190 based System won't boot

    Sorry meant E2160.

I am in the process of upgrading my pc (AMD 2600 on a ASRock k7VM4 512mb ram to a E2160 on a Gigabyte 81865GME-775-RH (release3.9) initially with my old PC2700 ram. Unfortunately although it started to boot, it fell over as it went through the various drivers. I have disconnected all the non essential hardware but it still fails to boot. When I looked at the BIOS health check, there was a couple of things that struck me, the first was that the temperature of the CPU was approx 89C, within a minute of the PC being on (this was odd as I added an updated cpu cooler), the second was that the Vcore showed momentary fails. The power supply is 400w limited to 150w for 3.5 and 5v.
I have tried amending various items in the BIOS but it continues to fail to boot.

I have ordered 2 X PC3200 (400mhz) DDR memory and a new 320GB hard disc. I thought I would wait to fit these before going any further. I was then thinking of reinstalling XP on the new drive or even copying the data from the old drive beforte attempting to repair the XP. (The xp still works using the old motherboard)

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Sounds like your trying to use your old version of Windows from the old hard disk - won't work, so you'll need to do a fresh install.

As for temps, did you install HSF properly and use the right amount of thermal grease? Did the HSF have a thermal pad re-installed?

    Temperature

I used the syringe that came with the cooler. However, have just read a review on newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16813128051 which seems to suggest that release 3.9 does not report temperatures correctly until updated.

I think I will wait for my new HDD to arrive and install XP on that and see if that works.
    Many thanks

Removed the heat sink and turned round by 180 degrees. Temperature now down at normal levels circa 25c. I suspect it was prevented from seating properly due to a couple of proud capacitors.

I will inform you whether it will fully boot once I receive the new hard drive.

It does boot but the 320G hard dive is only seen as 131G.

    Any ideas?

Re: New E8190 based System won't boot

I have now but not when I reinstalled XP as my restore cd is rather old!

I have updated the XP now that I am back on line.
