New graphics card install problem

Hi guys,

My Nvidia 6800 died this week which is ok as it was just a temporary card until prices came down for the higher end ones. I bought a BFG 8800 gts to replace it today and installed.

The system boots but as soon as it goes beyond the welcome screen and goes onto the normal XP desktop the screen goes blank. The problem I belive lies with the fact that the old drivers are still installed but as I can not access windows with the new card I am unable to uninstall them. I have tried safe mode but the same problem occurs.

The system itself is booting ok from what I can gather as I can access the drives from my other pc over the direct lan connection i have, it just there is no display.

Is there any way of removing the old drivers or do i need to wipe the drive and reinstall windows?

Boot into safe mode - F8 at bootup - should load basic VGA and allow you to remove the older drivers....

Use drivercleaner to remove old drivers

Run it in safe mode, then reboot and install new drivers.

Problem is I cant get into safe mode, screen goes blank before i can access it.

Safe mode menu is before OS even starts to load...very strange.
I'd say get any compatible card and remove the drivers

Yeah, tell me about it. When going in to safe mode it shows the desktop for about half a second then blanks out.

Try the repair function with the windows CD if you can't get another 6800.

Tried that and after the first few screens it blanks out. Im starting to think that something else might be wrong, just dont know what.

Try hitting Esc button while booting in safe mode. There's an option not to load few drivers. Perhaps that may help load the OS and actually see something

Tried the suggestions, still no joy. Have just tried disconnecting my hard drive and installed another from another machine to wipe and install a fresh copy of windows, get as far as the format partiton stage then it blanks out. I dont know what else to try, this is starting to drive me nuts.

You could try using DBAN (google for it, it's a Sourceforge project, I've not enough posts to post URL's =/) to format that hard drive.

If it's got dual display ports, try the other one? It may be that you've got it connected up to the secondary one rather than primary. It shouldn't make a difference unless the drivers are fussy.

If you still can't do it, run drivercleaner in windows (desktop) instead or you could always reinstall windows, it don't take that long with a nlite/ryanvm cd.

Try the card in another machine - I think the problem is more likely to be with the GPU shutting down due to over heating or lack of power. You have plugged in the peripheral PCI-E Power connector right? What is your PSU?

Took card back to the shop, they tested it and its ok. Installed new power supply, corsair hx 620, new hard drive for fresh install and still have exactly same problem. The only thing that i can think of is that the motherboard is playing up but honestly dont know. Might just take it to a shop and pay the £30 for them to diagnose the fault,

Maybe clear the mobo BIOS/check settings that might have defaulted to the 6800 specs and not updated to accomodate for the 8800.
