    something not right

    hey guys and gals !

    recently bought the following,

    500w silverstone PSU
    sugo evolution sff case
    Gigabyte ds2r micro atx motherboard

and the bits i already own >

    xeon 3060
    ati x1950xtx
    2gb cellshock pc8000
    dvd drive

basically i built it all and turn it on, and all fans come on but nothing appears on screen..

so i try one stick of memory in various slots etc, then turn it on once more. no luck.

    still nothing.

so i then reset the cmos and try again, still nothing, so i then plug the monitor into my on board vga, but again nothing.

ok so i then try a different cheapy pci-e graphics card, but again, nothing.

so what the hell can it be? processor or memory?

i have bought an e4300 and a crappy stick of bog standard mem for testing purposes which arrives tomorrow. or could i be missing something here?

Does the motherboard support that CPU?

    Re: something not right

If there is nothing wrong with your monitor then Id have to guess it was the motherboard. If you've tried a different CPU, change the RAM and changed the graphics card then that's all that's left.

Do you not get any error beeps or something?

Clunk makes a good point. Many motherboards can boot with no CPU in them if they are working correctly (though obviously all you see is the bios).

    Re: something not right

Does the Cellshock use Micron chips? It might be something similar to my P5K with Crucial Ballistix.

My ram is specced at 2.2v yet by default the motherboard only supplies 1.8v unless its forced in the BIOS to supply higher.

I have an ongoing issue with my P5K where it will sometimes do exactly as yours does, fully power but never post, my spec is similar to yours.

I was advised to set the memory to 2.2v to stop this although I have not dared to shut the machine down since I have done this.

If you can't get it to post at all I am not sure how you can get the 2.2v setting in the BIOS unless you can try with some other RAM.

Your problem is simply the wrong RAM voltage is set. All motherboards will default to 1.8v because that is the default voltage set by the JEDEC spec.

My Ballistix 8500 sticks will boot fine every time @ 1.8v/533Mhz , but that doesnt mean they are stable.AM frequency, they will need more voltage, especially if you are running tighter timings.

thanks for that guys, well i am waiting for city link ... lol

so once i have booted up, all i need to do is set 2.2v in bios for the memory and then insert my cellshock?

yes they are micron chips that require 2.2v

    Re: something not right

Yup, get into the BIOS force 2.2v in the memory setup, not sure where the option would be on your board, mine is in overclocking options.

Once you have forced 2.2v save and power down, then put your cellshocks in and power up.

    See http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=116764

Let us know how you get on.

You need to set the timings manually as well, and if the RAM is higher than PC2-6400, you have to manually set the frequency too

I think there have been several problems with the windows authentication servers this last few days, ring them and see.
