    Poor DVD playback quality

    When I play DVDs on my computer, the picture is not very good, with areas of certain colours, especially where there are shadows, showing as graduated bands of colour, with distinct 'strata'. Is this down to my dvd decoding software, or my monitor, or something else? Ta for any help.

    Your rig looks pretty meaty so doubt thats to blame.

    What program are you using for playback?

    What monitor are you using? Playing back low res DVDs on an LCD monitor always looks a bit rubbish IMO, though software can get around some of it.

    It's not unusual for the gamma to be a bit off. You can twiddle it yourself by going to the colour correction screen and fiddling with the curve. This page has some test patterns you can use.

    Re: Poor DVD playback quality

    Does it look a lot better when you run the DVD in a window rather than full screen?

    I also find turning off hardware acceleration for windows media player helps sometimes - that's in CCC for ATI, not sure where for nVidia.

    Re: Poor DVD playback quality

    Try playing it in PowerDVD and in NVidia DVD decoder try setting the settings to default and untick and retick 1 option at a time until your sorted.

    Also give VLC a go, that's what I've been using recently and it's not too bad.

    Re: Poor DVD playback quality

    I have found the NVIDIA DVD decoder to be less than great quality.

    Used to use it for TV playback and it used to artifact like crazy on black areas.

    No such trouble with my current setup (Linux/MythTV). I suggest a different decoder, even if it does use the CPU... you have the power for it
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Ah, right........ could you recommend any other decoders for windows xp? Just assumed that PowerDVD wouldn't be as good as the Nvidia ones as it was cheaper, but yes, I know what they say about assumption

    Re: Poor DVD playback quality

    You might want to try Media Player Classic and use the Dscaler plug in. Dscaler is an installer whilsr MPC is just an .exe to run.

    If you go to the options/internal filters section you can turn off the Mpeg2 decoder MPC comes with. Then go to the external filters section, and you can add Dscaler & set it to high preference. That might work for you.

    Re: Poor DVD playback quality

    Does anyone have any suggestions for the best filters I can use to prevent motion blur / pixelization during playback for old 4:3 shows on DVD. Newer widescreen shows/movies don't give me any problems... but the artefacts present in old 4:3 shows are a big distraction... especially, as kalniel points out, on an LCD monitor.
