First Pc Build Problem - Please Help!

Just finished putting together first build and went for power on but am getting nothing, fans not firing up, no lights on case led's etc but have got light on the motherboard.

Mobo - Asus P5n32-sli premium
CPU - Intel Q6600

Things I have checked -

PSU- checked voltages with a tester for all connections all as expected.
Jumper is set to correct position.
Checked the case button connections on motherboard.
I have switched the motherboard power switch connection to the case alarm switch to see if it was the case power button but that switch brought no response.


PS Motherboard placement pins are fitted in case. Have been using antistatic wrist strap religously with atistatic mat.

Ideas Anyone !?

If the power/reset/led jumpers are on the correct pins, and you have plugged in the power leads to the graphics card, and the 12v EPS lead to the motherboard, and the PSU is actually OK, then my first suspect would be the I/O shield.

Take the I/O shield out and snip off all the stray bits of metal.

You will have to take the board out to do this, so build it up on some cardboard and see if it fires up. if not, it could be RMA time.

It could be, but the only way to find out, is to eliminate each item by testing.

If you havent already got some spare bits, you either need to borrow from your mates, or nip to a local pc repair shop and get them to test for you.

Also, get a pair of pliers and tighten all the motherboard standoffs. If one of them isnt tightened up, it is often enough to short something, so it is worth having a look at.

to start to boot successfully you need Motherboard / memory / cpu (and the case only for switches).

disconnect everything else.
put a bare minimum of memory in (I see people have had trouble with overheating)

It may halt at the bios (beeping) to tell you that you have no keyboard or video card.
but this would be progress! you can then add components one-by-one until it stops

If that doesn't work

I would also consider the PSU may malfunction under load.

I would try to leave the other computer as is in it's case but run new PSU (carefully isolated!) powering all the connections into old computer mother board / case.

that would at least eliminate PSU!

Thanks for all your help guys, sussed out the problem was the brand new psu! even though tested fine within a few attempts of getting system to power on unit started screaming and the I/O button fused itself to on.

Returned the non branded unit and paid extra to get the ocz stealthxstream 600w, and system was running perfectly straight from new psu being fitted.

Will never trust the unbranded units again after being such a tight arse will now just pay the extra.
