    Unhappy Intel Chipset Update

Basically I ran the update, everything went fine until I restarted, when the computer will turn on fine and just get stuck at the AI Life Style screen where it says to press del to run setup and tab to display BIOS post message. See what now? Do I need to send the motherboard back? Or is there away of getting it to work? My keyboard won't work as it's a usb one and the usb ports don't seem to have any power to them right now. I have a usb to ps/2 connector but still the keyboard will not work.

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

I think you mean a BIOS update, not Intel chipset update, no?

    USB - PS/2 convertors don't work for all keyboards/mouses.

Did you clear CMOS after the flash?

    No. This chipset drivers.

I think I saw what I did. Wrong ones but it said in the install it was for the P35. D'oh

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

There is no reason for your BIOS to hang after a software update, that doesn't do anything to the hardware.

It is standard for USB keyboards not to work during POST unless legacy USB is turned on in the BIOS but obviously that doesn't help you if you can't get in the BIOS to turn it on.

But it might if you try to update the chipset with the wrong drivers.

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

No, you are only updating the software that Windows uses for the chipset, you aren't updating the "chip" on the board itself.

Your system would blue screen or hang when loading Windows if you install the wrong/faulty driver, not at the AI/boot screen.

Sounds like hardware like Tetras says, not software.........I guess you can't get into the BIOS ?

Nope. So the next course of action would be to see what piece of hardware is causing this.

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

If you have updated/changed any hardware I'd try a BIOS reset, sometimes that does the trick.

The next I'd try would be to remove memory sticks.

A PS/2 keyboard might still work though and you could press TAB to view the POST messages and see if you are getting an error, I'm surprised you aren't getting error beeps.

BIOS reset, you mean remove the CMOS battery?

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

Just use the jumpers, easier than removing the battery, your manual will tell you what the manufacturer suggests.

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

Theres no need to remove the battery, there will be a jumper near the battery that you can short (after throwing the switch on your PSU or pulling the power cord out of it) or there may even be a BIOS reset button on the motherboard or backplane, a number of the newer Asus boards do.

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

Done and it booted fine. Now do I remove what I installed?

I would like help with one more thing. The original reason I used those drivers was because, I have a floppy/card reader. However it does not work. The card reader shows up in my computer but cannot read the SD card I have. Also the floppy drive does not work, the floppy cable is connected but still wont read any disc that I insert. Drivers? I looked at device manager and it said that if i remember that smb or sbm or something like that was missing. So I googled it and got to the Intel website.

    Re: Intel Chipset Update

Well, I doubt the drivers would have done anything bad, they were either for your hardware and OS and have installed and are functioning correctly, or they are being disregarded by Windows as they don't match your hardware.

If the card reader shows up but the SD card doesn't, try a different SD card. I've had some cards and readers that didn't like each other - normally a high capacity card and an older reader though.

If the floppy isn't working.........Is the light on the front of the floppy on constantly or never at all? If its on constantly, try changing the cable around (you can normally fit the cable upside-down on floppies).....if there are no lights, check the power cable has been properly fitted (sometimes you can bend one of the pins up by accident, so not all of the 4 power pins are actually in the connector)
