Check your PC clock is synced properly, 99% of these types of errors are because it's out by a few minutes.

WHOW! thankyou so much raven!
Thought i'd jump on this thread rather than creating my own...
I'm stuck getting the 80772745 error (google has loads of results, just no solution)... I can sign in on the laptop next to me, and into webmessenger, I just cant sign in on this computer... the connection wizard thingy has a tick next to every item, yet it throws up the error message instantly
The other things to check are your routers port-settings, which version of messenger (try uninstalling and reinstalling) and the time thing again, even if your clock looks right, get it to resync with a different time site (try the US Gov ones) and see if that fixes it.

Every single time I install Vista, no matter what PC config or how many updates to sign into MSN Live I always have to do this:
Can't remember where the original source of that info was, it was somebodies blog.“- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
- Click Run As Administrator
- Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- Press enter
- Restart your computer”
