    Hard drive help needed!!

Ok folks, heres my problem -
I'm running xp on my 150gb raptor for games, and a 500gb for my vista OS. Id like to know how I go about transferring vista to my other hard drive, leaving the 500gb HD purely for storage (time to say good bye to xp!) - without having to format both drives and install vista from scratch (not enough spare time!!)

any help on this dilemma would be greatly appreciated

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

i had a hell of a lot of problems with the vista bootloader and moving partitions about, but to move your vista partition you would need to use software such as acronis partition magic (or whatever its called) and move the partition to the other harddrive, youll need to resize the partition already on it though to make room.

as for the booting part, i would let someone else help you with that!

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

sorry,Should really explain what im trying to do a little clearer-

-format the raptor (currently running xp)
-transfer vista from my 500gb hd to my raptor
-format 500gb and use for storage (movies, music etc)

hope that clears things up a little - and again any help would be truly appreciated!!!

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

In principle it would be a case of booting to Vista, reformat the raptor, copy the vista OS files to the raptor, and create an MBR on the Raptor, pointing to the raptor partition containing Vista. Once that is working and booting off the raptor, you can then reformat the 500G drive. However I am not familiar with Vista to describe the detail.

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

ok, think I may have sussed it, im currently formatting the raptor - i will then do a clean install of vista on the raptor - followed by a 'windows easy transfer' of all my files and settings. I should then in effect have two identical hard drives, leaving me free to format the larger hard drive - if im making a grave error i would love to know before its too late!!!!!!

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

as far as i'm aware microsoft changed their vista activation policy so that you can install it on a different drive. there were many complaints against the license initially because it was unfair to those people who like to keep up2date with technology, and in case of hard drive failures etc, it was ludicrous to have to purchase a new license key.

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

I'm not up to date with vista & it reinstalling. (it's still yet to pass my kinetic energy bargepole test)

One solution/work around unplug the 500gb sata then install vista on it, it shouldn't throw up a problem then (in thoery) as it should think this is a reinstall.
Once it's reinstalled you should be able to pulg the 500gb back in and reformat it.

You might have problems with doing an image, with xp you have to redo the lisence again, and the size miss match between 500gb and 150gb might cause problems.

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

Cloning the largerr disk to the smaller (ie a direct bit for bit copy) would probably work, provided the smaller disk is bigger enough to take the VISTA partition.

    (Cool - my 1000th post )

    Re: Hard drive help needed!!

Mcdaddy99 - Yes use one of the Acronis True Image products to do the job. You can use any of these:

Acronis® True Image 10 Home (backup also)
Acronis® Migrate Easy 7.0 (just disk migration)

And probably this too but I'm not 100% sure on this one:

Acronis® Disk Director Suite 10.0 (like Partition Magic)

    http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing

The also have professional products that allows you to do the same thing across hardware platforms which is really cool and sometimes a life saver. But you dont need that for just changing a disk.
