How do I get rid of Dialer.Geneic?

I recently ran a full system scan using Norton and it came across 3 Dialer.Geneic's I have been able to locate one by following the path that it was found in and removing the msi and a couple of programmes in the folder that I do not use. The other two I can not find. The location is given as [btwebcontrol.dll] inside of [C:\recycler\nprotect\ooo46744.msi] and [btwebcontrol.dll] inside of [C:\recycler\nprotect\ooo46743.msi]. Norton is calling them both High risk and therefore I am reluctant to go back onto the internet. Please could somebody help me to get rid of these. Many thanks in advance. Tegan

Boot up into safe mode and rerun Norton. Should quarantine them leaving you able to remove them. Occasionally these dialer type programs are actually in the add / remove programs and can be got rid of that way.

If Norton won't remove them then you can manually just delete all files and registry entries whilst in safe mode. If they have viruses attached to them though you may find deleting them wont work, they have a habit of actually renaming themselves when you try to delete.

Start with that though and see how it goes, report back and let us know how you get on.

c:\recycler\nprotect is part of Norton, it's the folder where the Norton Protected Recycle Bin feature stores items you delete. Sounds like you need to empty this folder. I think the best way is to turn off this feature and reboot as that should delete it.

1 . On the Windows desktop, right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and then click Properties.

2 . On the Global tab, click Use One Setting for All Drives.

3 . On the Recycle Bin tab, click Standard Recycle Bin.

4 . In the Title field, type the following text: Recycle Bin

5 . On the Norton Protection tab, select a drive, and then uncheck Enable Protection.

Repeat this step for each drive.

6. Select Also Empty Protected Files.

7 . Click OK, and then click OK again.

8 . Restart the computer. The "Nprotect" folder should then no longer exist.

If you want to continue using the Norton Protected Bin and Unerase, re-enable the Norton Protected Recycle Bin.

You may also want to run Adaware 2007 and spybot S & D.

Hijackthis is also a good free tool. It will tell you what is running on your system. It saves a log file that can be pasted or uploaded to here and this will then tell you what is good or bad. Very handy for seeing what malware/trojans etc are actually running.

Thanks for your advice. I tried logged on in safe mode and ran a full system scan. Norton found the two Dialer's but would not quarantine them or allow me to do anything else to them other than review or ignore. I am not sure what you mean by deleting all the registry files, not that good with the old IT. I ran Windows defender and it found a different Dialer but neither of the Norton ones. I only have 10 days left on my norton account and am planning on using a different internet security provider. If what Iranu suggest is correct then I assume that the files are within Norton somewhere then removing Norton from my system should get rid of these.

Thanks for the help, I tried re-naming and restarting but Norton still found the dialers. I did not have time to run through the other bits but will have a crack at those tonight, prior to removing Norton.

Try Spybot, or do an online scan with something like ewido.
