Worried abou CPU Temp

Hello

I hav Core2Duo E6400 on a Intel D946 GZIS, no GPU installed

In Bios i checked my CPU Temp -

Processor Fan Speed - (1380-1500)
Processor Temp - 57C
Internal Temp - 40C
Remote Temp - 48C

And some Voltage Figures..

I then insalled SpeedFan Utitlity it also shows a average temp of about 50-53C

CPU Temp - 50-54C
Core1 Temp - 48C
Core1 Temp - 48C
HD temp - 41C
Remote temp - 50C
Internal Temp - 42C
Fan1 : ~1000RPM

All this when my system is absolutely idle and usage is about 5%

The Computer is at a corner and its moderately ventilated..

Im Really worried , are these temp's normal cuz by reading other threads i got scared...

I done hav any extra Fans installed just a fan over CPU heat sink and a fan in the PSU...

What should i do to get it cooled?

Yeah, that is too hot. The max "case temp" (the temp at geometric centre of chip) for an E6400 is ~61 degrees, which you could well go over under load if you are at about ~55 degs idle.

First off, I'd buy a case fan for starters. They're only a few quid, and it'll probably solve your problem.

If not, two further options:

Buy a new heatsink: The arctic freezer pro 7 is ~£15 and would do fine.

OR: you could just try re-seating the heatsink you've got (an intel stock heatsink right?). I'd buy some new thermal compound to do this.

Either way, it'd be wise to clean the top of the CPU with some isopropanol first. Maplin is a good place to find some.

thnx for the response.. btw the figures above are after the system had been running for about 10hrs strait.

I did this once earlier when some dust had got collected within my system heatsink, i had took it out n just cleaned it with a piece of cloth n put it bak in... is this ok or could it do damage to heatsink..

Firstl ill go buy a case fan.. how do i re-seat the heatsink?

You shouldnt damage the heatsink at all but if you take it out and reseat it without properly cleaning off the compound and then re-applying new thermal compound to the CPU then you may notice a big decrease in cooling efficiency rather than helping.

As another poster suggested, try the Artic Freezer Pro CPU cooler, its a bargain and should drop your temperatures.

In my P180 with only moderate case cooling (as I dont like noise) my CPU cores never get above 58c and the CPU 'heat spreader/CPU case temp' never above 49c and thats under heavy CPU load, using Prime95 for 8hours+

Sounds like you've already done it, if you've take it out to clean it.

It's important that you clean the CPU/heatsink and then reapply some thermal compound if you do this though, rather than just "put it back on"... otherwise the thermal compound will end up patchy or too thick/thin in places. Maybe this is the cause of your problem, if you took the heatsink off before?

Anyway, it's pretty simple to do properly... just look up some info on the net.

I took out the sink. cleaned all the dust and put it back in. While fixing it back i noticed a very thin layer of greyish material on top of Processor Socket Cover, What is that?... thermal compound thing?

I dont know if ill easly be able to get thermal compound here in Delhi, cuz a lot of people here jus buy some extra fans and a good PSU and they are happy, alsi i havnt really asked about it at any shop.

The Thermal Compound doesnt look like a very good solution to me cuz i dont like taking heat sink out and reseating it is a bit of a pain and it didnt really help today as temp is still around same, ~50C with the cabinet open from one side.

I also noticed the greyosh material on the processor socket was spread inconsistently.
I for some reason also feel buying a Case Fan would'nt help cuz with the Airconditioning on in my room and cabinet open, Temp still hasnt dropped below 49-50C.

I feel the heat-sink fan isnt running very fast ~950RPM.

Should i increase the fan RPM, Get some Thermal Compaund, Buy a better heat sink??

Edit: Also planning to buy a XFX 8600GTS XXX 256mb next month

Arctic Silver 5 is a good choice, if relatively expensive. But anything would do. It's very very important, as it forms the thermal interface between your heatsink and the cpu. If it's not applied well, your heatsink won't be capable of cooling the CPU properly, as the heat can't be conducted into it well enough.

Look up some info on the net about how to properly clean your heatsink to CPU, how to apply the thermal compound correctly, and how to reattach the heatsink. There is plenty of information out there.

im going to buy the recommended Thermal compound + case fans tommorow..

However ther is another problem the fan placing and type..
The fan on the heatsink is intake

I hav two Fan slots in my Case, one rear and one at the side
Should i get a intake for the side and exaust at rear or, just an intake at the rear or side slot??

Please Let me know soon cuz i have to buy em tommorow..

Instructions for applying Acrtic silver can be found on there web site here

Other stuff to consider is Arctic Cooling -MX1 or MX2
Basically the same sort of stuff, just memtioned if you cannot find Arctic Silver then Arctic Cooling MX1 or MX2 will be fine instead

The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro cpu cooler comes with thermal paste already applied (it's MX1) and most other coolers will ether have paste with them or pre-applied
Just remember to remove any old thermal paste from the cpu before reappling new stuff or placeing a new cooler with pre-applied paste

Another cooler to look for is the Akasa AK-965 should be slightly cheaper than the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and just as good

The rear slot is where you want your first fan

The front of the case is where you want to put a 2nd fan

I'd not replace the Plastic vent on the side with a fan unless you want to put a 3rd fan in.

EDIT: you'll probably need to remove the plastic vent on the side pannel if you get a new cpu cooler as they tend to be taller than the stock one.

EDIT2: Fan size, get a ruler and mesure across the grill at the back to see what size fan you need.
In the picture there are 2 sets of holes for the screws at each corner of the vent so you can take 2 differnt sizes of fan. probably ether 80mm/92mm or 92mm/120mm

yep in at the front and out at the back.

Got a pic of the front inside of the case? I ask as fitting a fan in the front of some cheap cases is a bit tricky as they don't leave space between the front and the hard dives

Odd case, doesn't seem to have a place for a front fan
However something like the Scythe KAMA-BAY would fit in there quite well

Ideally matched air flow is what you want but greater output to input is the next best thing.
Stick a rear case fan in first.
