Keyboard / Mouse in Vista

One of my hallmate's computer have some trouble with using kb / mouse combo in Vista.

When a set of USB Mouse/KB got plugged in, Vista asks do the user want to install driver (which is moot because there is no mouse / kb there to press "yes"

When the keyboard gets unplugged and replugged the same thing happen. I plugged in my Logitech MX3100 and it somehow installed the driver automatically. However if I mess with the driver in any way it won't detect again.

He is using a set of Belkin wireless keyboard (bought from SCAN). The keyboard appeared very sluggish in Vista where it doesn't pick up most of the key input (need to press num lock like 5~10 times to get it on/off. When the same Belkin keyboard got hooked on my Windows XP laptop, it worked perfectly. My Logitech keyboard works on both Vista and Windows XP.

When the mouse is installed, it is defaulted as "USB Browser Mouse" and report something like the driver is not compatible with Vista and may be it was for Windows 95. However if I go into device manager to manually change the driver to "USB Browser Mouse" or "HID Compatible mouse" it works.

I was about to suggest a reinstall of Vista, but does anyone have other suggestion?

It could simply be that the product isn't 100% compatable with Vista, since there's no updated drivers that I can find on the Belkin site, I'd suggest simply picking up a cheap keyboard and mouse and waiting to see if a new driver comes out.

If you could install the drivers and then plug them in?
