XP won't shutdown with USB DVD connected

Got a system which has 2 external USB DVD writers connected to it. Doesn't matter which one (or both) of the drives is connected XP hangs at "windows is shutting down" and I have to press the power button to get the system to shut down. Have tried using a powered USB hub to connect the drives and it's the same.

Customer says it has only started doing this recently and worked fine before that. I was wondering if anyone had seen anything similar and whether it might be related to a reent microsoft update?

Anyone any insight into what might be causing this?

Checked the event log for clues ?

Other reading suggests a drive firmware update may help but that offers no clues as to why it may suddenly of started without warning.

You could also open the device manager and look under the 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' tab at the bottom, right click on each entry and select 'uninstall', do each one until the USB controllers list in the device manager is empty. Make sure the drives are connected when you do this. Once you have un-installed them all, try a shut down and see if it works, when it restarts, it will rebuild the USB table from scratch.

Your mileage may vary, but I hope one of these works for you...

What are the make/model of the drives, and enclosures ? I have seen problems in the past with 'lacie' external boxes where the power supplies get swapped round, they look the same, connectors are the same, but the ratings are different, and swapping them round caused no end of problems... took me a while to find that one my self, but simply swapping the power supplies for the external enclosures may have some affect....

    Good luck !

Re: XP won't shutdown with USB DVD connected

first thing I did was check the event log and there was nothing of note in there.

Done a complete reinstall of XP and it's still the same.

System is an HP M7000 desktop and the external drives are Liteon units.

Think I'll add in a PCI usb card and see what happens when they connect to that.
