First the gfs PC, now mine

Hey all

I used my PC on saturday night, all was fine.

I turned it on this evening and during the loading of the OS i get a message stating that the system is running in Fale Safe mode please recechk bios cmos or something along those lines, anyone got any ideas?

You can try clearing the CMOS to see if that helps, the instructions to do this will be in the manual for your motherboard.

It's usually along the lines of 'Remove mains lead from wall socket, then remove coin cell battery on the motherboard, then press the button on the front of the computer that usually turns it on, then replace the coin cell, and the mains lead'.

Some motherboards have a jumper setting you need to move to clear the BIOS, again, the manual for your motherboard will have this information, carefully follow the steps it lists to clear the CMOS, it's a very simple process but getting it wrong can kill a motherboard, so please follow it to the letter.

Once cleared, on first boot, enter the BIOS and scroll through all the menu's looking for the option that says 'Load BIOS Defaults' or 'Load Optimum Settings' or something along those lines, select the option to load the defaults, then save and exit.

If the problem was caused by the CMOS being corrupted, then what you just did will reset it and the computer will now boot....

If it still fails to boot, then it's not likely to be the CMOS, and that means it's fault finding time...

Post back if it doesn't fix the problem and we can go from there....

Do you have surge protectors on your mains supplying the computer ?

How old are the computers ? Coin cell's are similar to watch battery's and will die over time, it may be that you need a new coin cell only, won't know without more info....

i had this once with a asrock motherboard,,, i changed the cmos battery work great then........

Glad it worked out for you and that it wasn't anything more 'expensive'

Don't know why CMOS's get corrupt like this from time to time, it seems to happen for no apparent reason... as you are surge protected then it's not 'dirty mains' or anything like that...
